Steve Soper
Steven Soper is a racing driver from Surrey, England, born in 1951. He raced in major sports car and touring car categories in the 1980s and 1990s. He won the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1987, the 24 Hours of Spa in 1995 and the Guia Race in 1997 – many of which through his longest association, with BMW. Soper River
The Soper River ( Inuktitut: , meaning "the great river") () is a waterway on Baffin Island, Nunavut. The river flows over and then empties into Soper Lake and Pleasant Inlet. The Soper River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1992. Research The Soper River region's plants have not been studied or inventoried since the 1920s. In June 2012 four Canadian botanists from the National Herbarium of Canada travelled to the Soper River region to assess the region's botanical biodiversity by collecting samples and cataloguing the plant specimens. The expedition was part of a five-year project to record Arctic flora and improve the taxonomy of the Arctic ecology. Tasiujarjuaq (Inuktitut syllabics: ''ᑕᓯᐅᔭᕐᔪᐊᖅ'', meaning "big lake-like lake") formerly Soper Lake is a large, irregularly shaped lake in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is located on Baffin Island's Meta Incognita Peninsula. The Inuit name references the lake's meromictic attribute, a mixture of fresh and salt water caused by a set of reversing falls and tides in Pleasant Inlet. The fresh water of Soper River drains into the lake which then drains into the salt water of Pleasant Inlet before reaching the Arctic Ocean. Dewey Soper Migratory Bird Sanctuary, or Dewey Soper, is a migratory bird sanctuary in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is located in western Baffin Island, from Bowman Bay to the Koukdjuak River, and is named in honour of zoologist J. Dewey Soper. It is an area that was classified a wetland of international importance via the Ramsar Convention on May 24, 1982. The bird sanctuary supports nearly 30% of the breeding geese in Canada, making it the largest goose colony in the world. Up to two million birds of various species use the area for summer nesting, and it is also "habitat for one of Canada's major barren-ground caribou herds". Tony Soper (born 10 January 1929) is a British naturalist, author and broadcaster. Life and career Soper was educated at Hyde Park Elementary School and at Devonport High School for Boys, both in Plymouth. He joined the BBC at 17 as a "youth-in-training", subsequently graduating by way of studio manager to features producer in radio, then moved into television. Among the radio programmes he produced were ''Birds In Britain''. Soper co-founded the BBC's Natural History Unit as its first film producer, with Patrick Beech the then South West Controller. Cutting his teeth on the ''LOOK'' series he organised far-flung wildlife filming projects.
