Sonora Hebrew Cemetery
The Sonora Hebrew Cemetery, also known as Pioneer Jewish Cemetery, is an inactive Jewish cemetery founded in c. 1851, and located in Sonora, California. This was the first Jewish cemetery in the Gold Rush region. History The cemetery was founded by the Hebrew Benevolent Society and is mostly the graves of European-born Jews who emigrated to Gold Country. The first burial is recorded in 1853 as Hartwig Caro, age 17; however it's possible there was burials starting in 1851. Local Jewish community leader Mayer Baer (1821–1907), and then his son Julius Baer (1876–1972) maintained the cemetery up until 1972. As of 2022, there are only 44 visible grave sites. In 1962, the Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and Landmarks in the West was formed to help with education, and restoration for all of the Jewish cemeteries in Gold County. Sonora, California
Sonora is the county seat of Tuolumne County, California. Founded during the California Gold Rush by Mexican miners from Sonora (after which the city is named), the city population was 5,226 during the 2020 Census, an increase of 221 from the 4,903 counted during the 2010 Census. Sonora is the only incorporated community in Tuolumne County. History Sonora was founded by Mexican miners during the California Gold Rush. Named after their home state of Sonora, Mexico, it was once a booming center of industry and trade in California's Mother Lode. Most of the gold that was removable with traditional mining techniques was quickly extracted, leaving miners to use more complex and expensive mining techniques to reach deep pockets of quartz and gold. Sonora as well as other mining towns of the era experienced economic hardship when the value of gold decreased. Nevada City Jewish Cemetery
Nevada City Jewish Cemetery is a no longer active Jewish cemetery founded in 1854 by the Nevada Hebrew Society, and located in Nevada City, Nevada County, California. The last burial was during the summer of 1890. There are only 29 headstones that are visible. On October 29, 1972, the site was dedicated as a historical site. It is priavtely operated by the Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and Landmarks in the West and is not open to the public. History The Nevada City Jewish Cemetery was founded in 1854 by the Nevada Hebrew Society. The first burial was Caroline Himes who died in July 19, 1856. The last burial happened in the summer of 1890, with the death of Louis W. Dreyfuss in July 22, 1890. Chevra Kaddisha Cemetery, Sacramento
Chevra Kaddisha Cemetery (English: ''Holy Society''), later known as Home of Peace Cemetery, was the first Jewish cemetery in California founded on November 12, 1850, by the Sacramento City Hebrew Association, and was once located at 33rd at K Streets (present-day 3230 J Street) in the East Sacramento neighborhood of Sacramento, California. The cemetery closed around 1924, and is no longer standing. It is the location of a strip mall, there is no historical plaque. The site is listed as a California Historical Landmark (number 654-1), by the California Office of Historic Preservation since July 28, 1958. History Moses Hyman, a merchant from New Orleans that settled in Sacramento in 1849, had donated to the Jewish Benevolent Society for the establishment of the cemetery.
