Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and Mark Ibold (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Sonic Youth have been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do" using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings while preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre. The band was a pivotal influence on the alternat ...

Enigma Records
Enigma Records (also known as Enigma Entertainment Corporation) was a popular rock and alternative American record label in the 1980s. History Enigma Records launched as a division of Greenworld Distribution, an independent music importer/distributor, in 1981. Four years later, in 1985, Enigma severed ties with Greenworld and became its own company. Enigma was initially located in Torrance, California, then El Segundo, California and finally Culver City, California. Enigma was founded and run by brothers William and Wesley Hein. Jim Martone joined the company in 1984. Enigma focused on punk rock, alternative, and heavy metal music though it also released techno (Synthicide Records), jazz (Intima Records) and classical music (Enigma Classics) through subsidiary labels. The label's first release was Mötley Crüe's ''Too Fast for Love''. The album was initially released under the band's own Leathür Records imprint but manufactured, marketed and distributed by what would becom ...

B-sides
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides. Use of this language has largely declined in the 21st century as the music industry has transitioned away from analog recordings towards digital formats without physical sides, such as CDs, downloads and streaming. Nevertheless, some artists and labels continue to employ the terms ''A-side'' and ''B-side'' metaphorically to describe the type of content a particular release features, with ''B-side'' sometimes representing a "bonus" track or other material. The ...

Rather Ripped
''Rather Ripped'' is the fourteenth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 13, 2006, by Geffen Records. It was the band's first album following the departure of multi-instrumentalist Jim O'Rourke, who had joined as a fifth member in 1999. Unlike its immediate predecessors, the album was produced by John Agnello and recorded at Sear Sound in New York City, the same studio where the band's 1994 album, ''Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star'', was recorded. It also completed Sonic Youth's contract with Geffen, which released the band's previous eight records. ''Rather Ripped'' is considered to be one of Sonic Youth's most accessible albums, featuring an abundance of concise songs dealing with melancholic topics such as adultery, sexual frustration, and infidelity. Upon its release, the album peaked at number 71 on the US ''Billboard'' 200 and number 64 on the UK Albums Chart. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its simpler, cle ...

Sonic Nurse
''Sonic Nurse'' is the thirteenth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 8, 2004 by Geffen Records. Content and controversies The album's cover art was designed by artist Richard Prince from his '' Nurse Paintings'' series. Furthermore, one of Prince's photographic creations in this series was titled "Dude Ranch Nurse", which is also the name of a song on this record. "Pattern Recognition" was based on the 2003 William Gibson novel of the same name. Sonic Youth had used Gibson's work as an influence before, notably on a few tracks from ''Daydream Nation'' (1988). "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" was previously released as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" on the first Narnack ''Buddy Series'' 7", but the title was changed due to controversy. Reception The album has a score of 77 out of 100 from Metacritic based on "generally favorable reviews". ''No Ripcord'' gave the album 10 out of 10 stars and said it "could be the best ...

Murray Street (album)
''Murray Street'' (sometimes written as ''Murray St.'') is the twelfth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 25, 2002 by DGC Records. ''Murray Street'' is the first album by the band to feature Jim O'Rourke as an official fifth member to bolster the group's sound. Background and recording Recording began in August 2001 in the band's Echo Canyon studio in New York City, following their final ''NYC Ghosts and Flowers/Goodbye to the 20th Century'' tour. The first release of material from the sessions was the song "Plastic Sun", on a promotional CD included with an issue of ''Jane'' magazine. However, due to an error in the pitch, the band re-released the song on their website. Recording sessions reached an unexpected halt on September 11, 2001, following the terrorist attacks, as the band instead led a Trade Center benefit festival on October 9. Several other benefits and gigs led them to their rescheduled March 17, 2002, appearance at the All Tomorrow's ...

NYC Ghosts & Flowers
''NYC Ghosts & Flowers'' is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on May 16, 2000 by DGC Records. The highly experimental album is considered to be a reaction to the theft of the band's instruments in July 1999, when several irreplaceable guitars and effects pedals were stolen. ''NYC Ghosts & Flowers'' was the first album since '' Bad Moon Rising'' in which the band used prepared guitar. Background As a result of the theft, the members of Sonic Youth relied upon "old guitars in their studio, unearthing instruments they hadn't used in years" which "along with equipment purchased to fulfill the remaining ..dates f the tour would serve as the foundation for six new songs written over the next month", in addition to "Free City Rhymes" and "Renegade Princess", which were written prior to the tour. The band members later acknowledged that "the gear theft was somewhat of a blessing, if lsoa rather unwelcome and unpleasant one, in that it truly for ...
