Sonia Scurfield
Sonia Scurfield, (née Onishenko; September 19, 1928 – June 14, 2018) was a Canadian philanthropist. She was the co-owner of the Calgary Flames hockey team from 1985 to 1994. She became the second woman, and the only Canadian woman, to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup when the Flames won the National Hockey League championship in 1989. Early life and education Sonia Scurfield was born on September 19, 1928 to Ukrainian/Russian immigrant parents, John Onishenko and Motia (Stupka) Onishenko. She was educated at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts as a lab technician. Afterward, she completed one year at the University of Manitoba where she earned a Bachelor of Social Work. Career She married Ralph T. Scurfield, on July 24, 1954, in Edmonton, Alberta. Hafford, Saskatchewan
Hafford is a town in the RM of Redberry, Saskatchewan, Canada, consisting of 414 residents at the 2021 Canadian census. It is located near Redberry Lake, which consists of only salt water. History The first overseer was T.G. Bavin for the village of Hafford in 1914. The Hafford Village Council and Board of Trade requested a doctor, and Dr. Whitemarsh was appointed for the village. The early community was first served by Luxembourg Post Office. The early village had three lumber yards, a general store, I.H.C. agency, a poolroom, livery barn, hardware, and post office. In 1913 the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the first restaurant opened. The hotel and bar were established in 1914. Atlanta Flames
The Atlanta Flames were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum and were members of the West and later Patrick divisions of the National Hockey League (NHL). Along with the New York Islanders, the Flames were created in 1971 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). The team enjoyed modest success on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs in six of its eight seasons, but failed to win a playoff series and won only two post-season games total. The franchise struggled to draw fans and, after averaging only 10,000 per game in the early years of 1979–80, was sold and relocated to Alberta to become the Calgary Flames.
