Sondika
Sondika (Spanish, ''Sondica'') is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the Autonomous Community of Basque Country, northern Spain. Situated directly south of the runway of Bilbao Airport, it is the location of Bilbao British Cemetery, containing a Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery with 58 casualties (not to be confused with a far larger municipal cemetery in neighbouring Derio). Bilbao British Cemetery
Bilbao British Cemetery is located in Sondika, in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, northern Spain. The British cemetery was originally located on the coast of Biscay from about 1775, before being disaffected and relocated to its current position in 1929. Commonwealth War Graves The cemetery contains a Commonwealth War Graves plot (maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission) with 58 casualties, many reburials from other cemeteries in the region where permanent maintenance could not be assured. These casualties include servicemen from Poland, as well as persons from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations. Service personnel from both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force are buried here. Bilbao Airport
Bilbao Airport is a minor international airport located north of Bilbao, in the municipality of Loiu, in Biscay. It is the largest airport in the Basque Country and northern Spain, with 5,469,453 passengers in 2018. It is famous for its new main terminal opened in 2000 designed by Santiago Calatrava. History After various aeronautic experiments in the province of Biscay, in October 1927 steps were taken by the ''Union of Public Works'' to establish an airport in Bilbao. A Provincial Board was created to study the possible location of the airport. It was not until 1936 that the ''General Aeronautics Management'' authorised the installation of an airport in Sondika.
