Something Necessary
''Something Necessary'' is a 2013 Kenyan drama film directed by Judy Kibinge. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. Plot Kenya 2007: Following the results of the disputed presidential elections, widespread violence erupts. Gangs of unemployed youth incited by politicians take to the streets all over the country. Anne wakes up in hospital from a coma to find that the life she had before the violence no longer exists. Her husband is dead and has been buried before she had a chance to mourn him. Her son Kitur is in a coma and The Haven, her farm and home, has been vandalized and ransacked. She has gone from being a nurse, wife and mother to an unemployed widow with a hospitalized son struggling to rebuild her farm. Judy Kibinge
Judy Kibinge is a Kenyan filmmaker, writer and producer. She has produced, written and directed a number of films, best known are ''Something Necessary'' (2013), ''Dangerous Affair'' (2002), and ''Project Daddy'' (2004). She is also known for establishing DocuBox, a documentary film fund for African filmmakers to help them produce and distribute their film. She released her first film, ''The Aftermath'', in 2002 and critics have said that she uses her films to impart stories about Kenya, particularly those about women and others that are typically not told in mainstream Hollywood. Biography Kibinge was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1967. Her family moved to Washington DC in America in 1969 when she was two. Her family stayed in the US for five years. Susan "Sue" Wangui Wanjiru is a Kenyan actress. She is famous for two movies in which she acted in 2013 and 2017, titled "Something Necessary" and the award-winning " 18 Hours", respectively. Kenyan General Election, 2007
General elections were held in Kenya on 27 December 2007. Voters elected the President, and members of the National Assembly. They coincided with the 2007 Kenyan local elections. Incumbent Mwai Kibaki, running on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket, defeated Raila Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Kalonzo Musyoka of Orange Democratic Movement–Kenya. The elections were strongly marked by ethnic hostility, with Kibaki a member of the traditionally dominant Kikuyu ethnic group, gaining much support amongst the Kikuyu and neighbouring groups in central Kenya, including the Embu and Meru. Kikuyu People
The Kikuyu (also ''Agĩkũyũ/Gĩkũyũ'') are a Bantu ethnic group native to Central Kenya. At a population of 8,148,668 as of 2019, they account for 17.13% of the total population of Kenya, making them Kenya's largest ethnic group. The term ''Kikuyu'' is derived from the Swahili form of the word Gĩkũyũ. is derived from the word mũkũyũ which means sycamore fig (''mũkũyũ'') tree". Hence ''Agĩkũyũ'' in the Kikuyu language translates to "Children Of The Big Sycamore". Kalenjin People
The Kalenjin are a group of tribes designated as Highland Nilotes and are descended from Maliri people ''(thus related to Daasanach of Ethiopia.)'' The Kalenjin are cousins with Datooga people of Tanzania and Malawi. In contrast, their designation groups them with other Nilotes including Maasai, Luo, Turkana and Nuer, Dinka among others.
