''Something Like a Bird'' is an album by Charles Mingus, released on the Atlantic Records, Atlantic label in 1981. The album reached a peak position of number 37 on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Jazz Albums chart. Mingus is featured as composer and director but does not actually play on this album, as his ALS had progressed to the point that he was no longer able to do so. These were the last sessions of his own music he ever participated in, although he did attend one session for the partial collaboration with Joni Mitchell, Mingus (Joni Mitchell album), Mingus before his death in January 1979. Reception The Allmusic review states: "It's not essential but certainly colorful.". Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) was an American jazz upright bassist, pianist, composer, bandleader, and author. A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history,See the 1998 documentary ''Triumph of the Underdog'' with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. Mingus' compositions continue to be played by contemporary musicians ranging from the repertory bands Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra, to the high school students who play the charts and compete in the Charles Mingus High School Competition.
