Somali National Television (SNTV) ( so, Telefishinka Qaranka Soomaaliyeed) is the national television station of Somalia. History The first regular TV services began in Somalia on 17 August 1983, with funds obtained from Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates with broadcasting (in Somali and Arabic) two hours daily and three hours on Fridays and holidays, ceasing its operation during the civil war. Re-launch On March 18, 2011, the Ministry of Information of the Transitional Federal Government began experimental broadcasts of the new television channel. After a 20-year hiatus, the station was shortly thereafter officially re-launched on April 4, 2011. SNTV broadcasts 24 hours a day, and can be viewed both within Somalia and abroad via terrestrial and satellite platforms. Horn Cable TV (HCTV) is a Somali news-based private television channel. Overview Founded in 2003, Horn Cable TV broadcasts in Somali from its headquarters in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. The station also has studios in Mogadishu and London, among other areas. Horn Cable TV is owned by Farhan Haji Ali, a young Hargeisa-based Somali entrepreneur who is also the owner of the FAACO. Somali Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) is a media group that operates in the Puntland region of Somalia, in particular the three main cities of Bossaso, Qardo and Garowe. SBC's broadcasting area of coverage is estimated at 1000 square km, and this is served by three stations in the above towns. SBC was established in June 2001. Its first FM radio services were established in the Puntland region and it was the first FM Radio which could be heard in three cities in Somalia. In November 2001, Somali Broadcasting Corporation established the first television service in Puntland. Shabelle Media Network (SMN) is a radio and television news organization based in Mogadishu, Somalia. History The Shabelle Media Network was founded in 2002 in Merca, Somalia by a group of young Somali intellectuals. Its mission was to ensure that Somalis around the world remain abreast of developments within the Somali community and in touch with each other. The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia consists of Ministers appointed by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister may dismiss members of the council, and new appointees must again be approved by the Parliament. The Council meets weekly on Thursdays in Mogadishu.
