Solidarity Union
Solidarity Union was a short lived trade union in New Zealand and was founded by activists and delegates, including Joe Carolan of Socialist Aotearoa in August 2006. By 2008 the union had ceased meaningful activity. Grant Morgan was a Trustee in 2010, and Leonard Charles Parker and Peter Michael Hughes in 2012. Purpose and actions The union sought to organise workers in clusters in South Auckland around an area strategy building local workers councils. It sees this as an antidote to the bureaucracies created by larger unions in New Zealand. Solidarity was opposed to partnership as a policy, preferring to see a "return to the fighting spirit" of the country's first union movement, the Red Feds. It built a modest base in the South Auckland industrial regions of East Tamaki and Onehunga, organising small engineering firms, glass workers, courier drivers and service workers. Socialist Aotearoa
Socialist Aotearoa (also known as SA and Socialist – People Before Profit) is a revolutionary socialist organisation based in New Zealand. SA formed as a split from Socialist Worker in 2008. They are based in Auckland and are part of the International Socialist Tendency. Joe Carolan, a Unite Union employee and former Mana party candidate, is a co-founder and the current Campaigns Officer. SA has been involved since its inception in organising and participating in campaigns against privatisation, corporate globalisation, racism and war. These campaigns have ranged from Aotearoa Not For Sale to Love Aotearoa Hate Racism, to the movement against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA). South Auckland
South Auckland is an imprecisely defined urban area of Auckland, New Zealand, with a young population, a relatively large Polynesian and Māori demographic, and lower incomes than other parts of Auckland. The New Zealand Federation of Labour, also known as ''The Red Federation'' and ''The United Federation of Labour'', was a New Zealand federation of syndicalist trade unions which was formalised in 1909. The federation is best known for its involvement in the nation-wide Great Strike of 1913 which almost brought New Zealand's economy to a halt. The Federation's members were often referred to as 'Red Feds'. Origin The federation was originally formed as the ''New Zealand Federation of Miners'' in 1908 after a strike of coal miners in Greymouth. The strike was largely in opposition to an arbitration act by government which meant that industrial disputes had to be settled in a special court. First Union New Zealand is a national trade union in New Zealand that was formed on 1 October 2011 by the merger of the National Distribution Union and Finsec. On the 7th of November 2018, the New Zealand Bakers, Pastrycooks and Related Employees Union amalgamated into First Union. The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU or CTU; mi, Te Kauae Kaimahi) is a national trade union centre in New Zealand. The NZCTU represents 360,000 workers, and is the largest democratic organisation in New Zealand.
