Solid State Records (jazz Label)
Solid State Records was a jazz record label formed in 1966 by producers Sonny Lester and Phil Ramone, with arranger Manny Albam. United Artists Records was an American record label founded by Max E. Youngstein of United Artists in 1957 to issue movie soundtracks. The label expanded into other genres, such as easy listening, jazz, pop, and R&B. Herbert Jay Solomon (April 16, 1930 – July 1, 2003), known by his stage name Herbie Mann, was an American jazz flute player and important early practitioner of world music. Early in his career, he also played tenor saxophone and clarinet (including bass clarinet), but Mann was among the first jazz musicians to specialize on the flute. His most popular single was " Hi-Jack", which was a ''Billboard'' No. 1 dance hit for three weeks in 1975. Mann emphasized the groove approach in his music. Mann felt that from his repertoire, the "epitome of a groove record" was '' Memphis Underground'' or '' Push Push'', because the "rhythm section locked all in one perception." ''Undercurrent'' is a 1962 album by jazz pianist Bill Evans and jazz guitarist Jim Hall. The two men collaborated again in 1966 on the album ''Intermodulation''. Cover and releases The front cover image for ''Undercurrent'' is Toni Frissell's photograph "Weeki Wachee Spring, Florida". The album was originally released on United Artists, then reissued by Solid State in 1968. Later, the album was reissued on the Blue Note label; both Blue Note and United Artists Records have been part of the same catalog for many decades. The original LP and the first CD reissue featured a cropped, blue-tinted version, overlaid with the title and the Blue Note logo in white; but for the most recent (24-bit remastered) CD reissue, the image has been restored to its original black-and-white coloration and size, without lettering. Johnny Lytle
Johnny Dillard Lytle (October 13, 1932 in Springfield, Ohio – December 15, 1995 in Springfield) was a jazz drummer and vibraphonist. Life and career Lytle grew up in Springfield, Ohio in a family of musicians, the son of a trumpeter father and an organist mother. He began playing the drums and piano at an early age. Before studying music in earnest, he was a boxer, and was a successful Golden Gloves champion. During the late '50s, Lytle continued to box, but landed jobs as a drummer for Ray Charles, Jimmy Witherspoon and Gene Ammons. Then he switched from drums to vibraphone and toured with organist Hiram "Boots" Johnson from 1955 to 1957. He formed his first group in 1957 with saxophonist Boots Johnson, organist Milton Harris and drummer William "Peppy" Hinnant. He impressed the producer Orrin Keepnews who signed him to his Jazzland label in 1960. Lionel Hampton said Lytle was "the greatest vibes player in the world." ''Music for Wives and Lovers'' is an album by American composer and arranger Nelson Riddle. It was his only release on the Solid State Records label. Origin Producer/musician Sonny Lester signed Riddle to the Solid State label. The liner notes report that he assembled a 42-piece orchestra "and supplied them with arrangements that are fresh and imaginative and in the free-wheeling, youthful spirit of the day." Riddle familiarly "features the harman-mute trumpet, the bass trombone and the baritone sax for powerhouse impact," and added the "exciting sound of the organ."
