Sogerail
Sogerail (later Corus France SA, 1999; Tata Steel France Rail, 2006) is a railway rail manufacturer near Hayange, in the Lorraine region of France. The company was formed 1994 as a subsidiary of Usinor-Sacilor. The business was acquired by Corus Group plc in 1999, becoming part of Tata Steel Europe in 2006 through merger of the parent company. In 2016 the company and other long products businesses in the Tata Steel Europe were divested, being acquired by Greybull Capital. Iron production at Hayange was established by the De Wendel family in 1892 as the ''Usine Saint Jacques''. Usinor-Sacilor
Usinor was a French steel making group formed in 1948. The group was merged with Sacilor in 1986, becoming Usinor-Sacilor and was privatised in 1995, and renamed Usinor in 1997. In 2001 it merged with Arbed (Luxembourg) and Aceralia (Spain) to form the European company Arcelor, which became part of ArcelorMittal in 2006. History Sacilor and predecessors In 1704 Jean Martin de Wendel bought an ironworks in Hayange, Lorraine in north-eastern France. Over the next one hundred years industrial production grew, and, in 1822 the first coke fired blast furnace in France was constructed. Further growth occurred under de Wendel family ownership in the next century; in 1850 approximately 20,000 tons of iron and cast iron each were produced, by 1869 this had increased 15 blast furnaces and a production of well over 100,000 tons of cast iron and iron each. Hayange
Hayange (; german: Hayingen; Lorraine Franconian: ''Héngen''/''Haiéngen'') is a commune in the Moselle department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. Outlying villages include Marspich and Saint-Nicolas-en-Forêt, Konacker and Ranguevaux. History Archaeological evidence indicates that iron ore was already mined here in Roman times. Scunthorpe Steelworks
The Iron and Steel Industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid 19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone east of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Initially iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. Later, after the construction of the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway (1860s) gave rail access to the area local iron production rapidly expanded using local ironstone and imported coal or coke. The local ore was relatively poor in iron (around 25% average) and high in lime ( CaCO3) requiring co-smelting with more acidic silicious iron ores.
