A software engine is a core software component, component of a Complex system, complex software system. The word "engine" is a metaphor of a car's engine. Thus a software engine is a complex subsystem. There is no formal guideline for what should be called an engine, but the term has become widespread in the software industry. JavaScript Engine
The first engines for JavaScript were mere interpreters of the source code, but all relevant modern engines use just-in-time compilation for improved performance. JavaScript engines are typically developed by web browser vendors, and every major browser has one.
