Softa Castle ( tr, Softa Kalesi) is a ruined castle in Bozyazı ilçe (district) of Mersin Province, Turkey. Geography The castle, to the east of Bozyazı district center is situated on a hill of high and close to Turkish state highway State road D.400 (Turkey), D400. However, the road doesn't reach the castle. Visitors have to walk up the last course. The distance to Bozyazı is only and to Mersin is . History The castle was built in late Roman Empire, Roman times. Its original name was ''Sycae'' ( el, Συκαὶ), and continued to be used under the Byzantine Empire. In the first half of the 13th century, it was captured by the Atabeg Ertokuş of the Seljuks of Rum, Seljuk Turks. It was also used during the Karamanid era (up to mid 15th century). In the 1470s it was captured by Gedik Ahmet Pasha of the Ottoman Empire. Archaeology It is an oval shaped castle where the narrowest diameter is about . Arsinoe (Cilicia)
Arsinoe ( grc, Ἀρσινόη) was a city on the coast of ancient Cilicia between Anemurium and Aydıncık, Mersin, Kelenderis; the site is near the modern city of Bozyazı, Mersin Province, Turkey. Strabo mentions Arsinoe as having a port. In the 19th century, William Martin Leake placed it at or near the ruined modern castle, called Softa Castle, Softa Kalesi (Sokhta Kálesi), just west of Bozyazı, below which is a port, such as Strabo describes at Arsinoe, and a peninsula on the east side of the harbor covered with ruins. This modern site is east of Anemurium, and west of, and near to, Kızil Burnu (Cape Kizliman). The city was founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus and named for Arsinoe II of Egypt, his sister and wife. The site of Arsinoe is located near modern an archaeological site named Maraş Harabeleri about east of Bozyazı in Anatolia. References
