Sofiya Magarill
Sofiya Zinovevna Magarill (Russian - Со́фья Зино́вьевна Магари́лл; (5 April 1900 – 15 October 1943, Alma-Ata) was a Soviet film actress. Life In 1925 she graduated from the A. Morozov theatre studio, after studying in FEKS workshops led by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg - she had married Kozintsev in 1923 and remained his wife until her death. Her first film was in 1924 and she also trained under Boris Sohn at the Lenfilm acting school between 1933 and 1936. She worked at the Leningrad New Theatre and from 1941 in Alma-Ata. She died of typhoid fever during the evacuation of Alma-Ata, which she had caught whilst nursing Sergei Yermolinsky. Sofia ( ; bg, София, Sofiya, ) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of the Vitosha mountain in the western parts of the country. The city is built west of the Iskar river, and has many mineral springs, such as the Sofia Central Mineral Baths. It has a humid continental climate. Being in the centre of the Balkans, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea. The New Babylon
''The New Babylon'' (russian: Новый Вавилон, Novyy Vavilon alt. title: russian: Штурм неба, Shturm neba) is a 1929 silent historical drama film written and directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg. The film deals with the 1871 Paris Commune and the events leading to it, and follows the encounter and tragic fate of two lovers separated by the barricades of the Commune. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his first film score for this movie. In the fifth reel of the score he quotes the revolutionary anthem, "La Marseillaise" (representing the Commune), juxtaposed contrapuntally with the famous " Can-can" from Offenbach's ''Orpheus in the Underworld''. Footage from ''The New Babylon'' was included in Guy Debord's feature film ''The Society of the Spectacle'' (1973). ''Lieutenant Kijé'' (russian: Поручик Киже, Poruchik Kizhe) is a 1934 Soviet comedy film directed by Aleksandr Faintsimmer and promoted by Boris Gusman, based on the novella " Lieutenant Kijé" by Yury Tynyanov. The film was released in the United States as ''The Czar Wants to Sleep''. Sergei Prokofiev composed the score; a five-movement suite based on the score quickly became part of the international concert repertoire. Plot Set in Saint Petersburg in 1800, the film satirizes the pedantic absurdities of the rule of Emperor Paul I. Sergei Yermolinsky
Sergei Aleksandrovich Yermolinsky (; 14 December 1900, Vilnius – 18 February 1984, Moscow) was a Soviet screenwriter and dramatist. Life A graduate of the Kaluga Gymnasium (Unified Labor School), he organized a theatre school in Kaluga. He studied at the Institute of Oriental Studies and in 1925 graduated from the Literature Faculty of Social Sciences at Moscow State University, going on to work on the newspapers Pravda and Komsomolskaya Pravda and in 1925 to collaborate with the film director Yuli Raizman. He became friends with Mikhail Bulgakov, whose participation in the Commission of the Union of Writers was partly what led to Yermolinsky's arrest in late 1940 - the order was signed by Pyotr Pavlenko. He was held in Lefortovo Prison, where he tried to commit suicide. With his involvement in anti-Soviet activities still unproven, he was transferred to another prison in Saratov.
