Sofia
Sofia ( ; bg, София, Sofiya, ) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of the Vitosha mountain in the western parts of the country. Hartmut Kirchhübel
Hartmut Kirchhübel (born 23 April 1952) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. Biography Born in East Germany, Kirchhübel and his family moved to Hanover when he was seven. After school he studied at a Medical College in Hanover, then worked as a Medizinalassistenten before completing his PhD at Hannover Medical School. Kirchhübel didn't begin competing in professional tennis until the age of 28. In 1980 he partnered with Robert Reininger to win the Sofia Open, a tournament on the Grand Prix tennis circuit. It was in doubles that he made his only Grand Slam appearance, which was at the 1981 Wimbledon Championships with Klaus Eberhard. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Ismail El Shafei
Ismail El Shafei ( ar, إسماعيل الشافعي) (born 15 November 1947) is an Egyptian former professional tennis player and president of the Egyptian Tennis Federation. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the International Tennis Federation and is chairman of the ITF Junior Circuit. He won six career singles titles and reached eleven finals. In doubles, he won nine career titles. Career El Shafei played his first tournament in March 1962 at the Egyptian Championships losing in straight sets to Italian player Giuseppe Merlo in the round of 32. Jiří Granát
Jiří Granát (born 28 January 1955) is a former professional tennis player from the Czech Republic who competed for Czechoslovakia. Career Granát took part in the main singles draw of nine Grand Slam tournaments during his career. He made the third round of the 1979 French Open, beating Jose Luis Damiani and then Francisco González. His only other Grand Slam third round appearances both came in 1982. He reached the third round of the men's doubles at the 1982 French Open (with Stanislav Birner) and 1982 US Open (with Erick Iskersky). On the Grand Prix tennis circuit, Granát won one title, which was the doubles at the 1981 Sofia Open. His best singles performance came at the 1977 Scandinavian Covered Court Championships in Helsinki, where he was a semi-finalist. Thomas Emmrich
Thomas Emmrich (born 21 July 1953) is a former tennis player for East Germany. Between 1970 and 1988, Emmrich won 46 German Democratic Republic (GDR) titles (17 singles and 29 in the doubles and mixed). He entered the tennis scene after the GDR had decided to promote only those sports which were relevant for the Olympics’ medals table. Thus, he was barred from international competitions outside the Eastern bloc countries and had to keep the status as an amateur. However, he gained some points at an ATP tournament in Sofia as GDR functionaries had not noticed that it had become part of the ATP tour. After this tournament, the ATP ranked him number 482—the only entry of a GDR tennis player in the ATP rankings. Martina Navratilova claimed that he could have become a top-ten player in the 1970s. Robert Reininger
Robert Reininger (born 20 January 1958) is a former professional tennis player from Austria. Biography Reininger, a right-handed player from Linz, was the Austrian junior champion in 1975. He followed it up with a national Under 21s title in 1976, then in 1979 was Austria's Indoor and Outdoor Championships in both singles and doubles. The top ranked player in Austria in 1979 and 1981, Reininger appeared in seven ties for the Austria Davis Cup team. This included a tie against Great Britain in Bristol and a match against Ilie Năstase in Bucharest. His only title on the Grand Prix tennis circuit was in the doubles at the Sofia Open in 1980. An unseeded pairing, he partnered with Hartmut Kirchhübel to win the tournament. As a singles player his best performances came in his home event, the Grand Prix tournament held in Linz.
