Socotra Airport
Socotra Airport (Arabic:مطار سقطرى) is an airport in Socotra, Yemen . It is the only commercial airport that serves the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea and its capital town of Hadibu. Overview The most remote Yemeni airport, which was opened in 1999, has a weekly flight connecting the island with the mainland airport in Mukalla where an aircraft makes a technical stop on their route to Aden. The airport is located on the paved road that connects Hadibo on the northern coast with the main tourist attraction on the extreme west of the island, Qalansiyah beach. It takes about two hours to get from the airport to Qalansiyah. There is no scheduled transportation service between the airport and Hadibo, but it can be reached within a quarter of an hour by vehicle. Socotra or Soqotra (; ar, سُقُطْرَىٰ ; so, Suqadara) is an island of the Republic of Yemen in the Indian Ocean, under the ''de facto'' control of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, a secessionist participant in Yemen’s ongoing civil war. Lying between the Guardafui Channel and the Arabian Sea and near major shipping routes, Socotra is the largest of the four islands in the Socotra archipelago. Since 2013, the archipelago has constituted the Socotra Governorate. The island of Socotra represents around 95% of the landmass of the Socotra archipelago. Hadibu
Hadibu ( ar, حديبو '), also known as Hadiboh, formerly known as Tamrida ( ar, links=no, تمريدة), is a coastal town in northern Socotra, Yemen. It is not far from the mount ''Jabal al-Jahir''. It is the largest town of the small archipelago, with a population of 8,545 at the 2004 census. Hadibu is also the capital of the larger eastern district of Socotra's two administrative districts, Hidaybū. For the inhabitants of the town, animal husbandry is the main source of income. Socotra Airport is located about west of Hadibu, and close to the third largest town in the archipelago, Qād̨ub. Diesel generators make electricity widely available in Socotra. Riyan International Airport
Riyan International Airport (also known as Riyan Mukalla International Airport) is an airport in Mukalla, Hadhramaut, Yemen. It is not to be confused with the former RAF Riyan, which is located closer to Mukalla. History The original airport was built around the 1930s. Flights were suspended in March 2015 as a result of the Yemeni civil war which led Al Qaeda militants to take advantage of the turmoil and control Mukalla. A no-fly zone over Yemen was imposed by the Saudi Arabian-led intervention due to the military conflict. Mukalla was later liberated from Al Qaeda, but the airport remained closed until the Emirates Red Crescent funded the building of new terminals and renovated the old airport at a cost of AED 25 million. Aden International Airport
Aden International Airport is an international airport in Aden, Yemen and the oldest airport in the Arabian peninsula. Prior to its use as a civil air facility, the aerodrome was known as RAF Khormaksar, which opened in 1917 and closed as an RAF station in 1967. In the 1970s and 1980s it was both a civilian airport and a Soviet Air Force air base. It continues to be used for military purposes by the Yemeni Air Force. Qalansiyah
Qulensya (; alt. Qalansiyah, Qalansia) is a town on the main island of Socotra, Yemen. Its approximate population is 4,000. History The area around Qulensya is host to several petroglyph sites created at an undetermined time. One site called Simar Qar lies west of the town. It consists of what appears to be an altar stone and two rock cupules with letters inscribed on the sides. Another site, known as Haida, was discovered in 1900 to the north of the town towards the mountains, though its exact location is unknown. At this site, inscriptions were found which were believed to have been from either a late Himyaritic or an Ethiopic script. Before an 1876 protection treaty with the British, the island of Socotra was barely governed by the ruling Mahra Sultanate.
