Society Of British Musicians
The Society of British Musicians was a Society founded in 1834, dedicated to promoting the composition and performance of British music. It gave concerts of works by leading British composers of the day. The Society was dissolved in 1865. Founding and early years The Society was founded in 1834 with the object of advancing native talent in composition and performance. In the original prospectus of the Society, attention was called to the contrast between the encouragement offered to British painting, sculpture, and other arts at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy, and the comparative neglect of English music and English musicians, the overwhelming preponderance of foreign compositions in all musical performances being cited as "calculated to impress the public with the idea that musical genius is an alien to this country," and as tending also "to repress those energies and to extinguish that emulation in the breast of the youthful aspirant, which alone can lead to pre-eminence. ...

The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is an art institution based in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London. Founded in 1768, it has a unique position as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects. Its purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. History The origin of the Royal Academy of Arts lies in an attempt in 1755 by members of the Royal Society of Arts, Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, principally the sculptor Henry Cheere, to found an autonomous academy of arts. Charles Neate (musician)
Charles Neate (28 March 1784 – 30 March 1877) was a British pianist and composer, and a founder member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. From 1815 to 1816 he lived in Vienna and became a friend of Ludwig van Beethoven. He publicised the music of Beethoven and other composers of the time at the Philharmonic Society. Early life Neate was born in London, and studied the piano with John Field and composition with Joseph Wölfl. On 2 March 1806 he was admitted as a member of the Royal Society of Musicians. John Tiplady Carrodus
John Tiplady Carrodus (1836–1895) was an English violinist. Life Carrodus was born on 20 January 1836, at Keighley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He took violin lessons from his father Thomas Carrodus, who was a barber and music-seller. He made his first appearance as a violinist at the age of nine, and before the London public four years later. He had the advantage of studying between the ages of twelve and eighteen at Stuttgart, with Bernhard Molique. He also “ became a 'follower of Louis Spohr, Spohr', who expressed his admiration for the Englishman's playing.” On his return to Britain in 1853 Michael Costa (conductor), Sir Michael Costa got him engagements in the leading orchestras. Agnes Zimmermann
Agnes Zimmermann (5 July 184714 November 1925) was a German concert pianist and composer who lived in England. Biography Agnes Marie Jacobina Zimmermann was born in Cologne, Germany. Her family moved to England, and she was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music at the age of nine, where her teachers were Charles Steggall and Cipriani Potter. Later she studied under Ernst Pauer and Sir George Macfarren. Zimmermann received the Kings Scholarship from 1860 to 1862 and made her public debut 1863 at The Crystal Palace playing Beethoven's ''Emperor Concerto''. After ending her studies, Zimmermann went on a tour of Germany, followed by concert tours in 1879, 1880, 1882 and 1883. She published her own editions of Sonatas by Beethoven and Mozart and compositions by Robert Schumann. Henry David Leslie
Henry David Leslie (18 June 1822 – 5 February 1896) was an English composer and conductor. Leslie was a leader in supporting amateur choral musicians in Britain, founding prize-winning amateur choral societies. He was also a supporter of musical higher education, helping to found national music schools. Biography Leslie was born in London. His parents were John Leslie, a tailor and enthusiastic amateur viola player, and Mary Taylor Leslie. He had eight brothers and sisters. Alfred Mellon
Alfred Mellon (7 April 1820 – 24 March 1867) was a British violinist, conductor and composer. Mellon was born in Birmingham, to a French father. At the age of 12 he joined the band at the Theatre Royal in that town, becoming leader at 16 before moving to London in 1844. He studied with Bernhard Molique in Stuttgart then returned to London to play the violin in the opera and other orchestras, and afterwards became leader of the ballet at the Royal Italian Opera, Covent Garden. Next, he was director of the music at the Haymarket and Adelphi theatres. He was subsequently conductor of the Pyne and Harrison English Opera Company, who in 1859 produced his opera, "Victorine", at Covent Garden. He was conductor of the Musical Society, and of the Promenade Concerts, which for several seasons were given under his name at Covent Garden. Carlo Alfredo Piatti
Carlo Alfredo Piatti (8 January 182218 July 1901) was an Italian cellist, teacher and composer. Biography Piatti was born at via Borgo Canale, in Bergamo and died in Mozzo, 4 miles from Bergamo. The son of a violinist, Antonio Piatti, he originally began his studies on the violin before switching to the cello. As a cellist, he studied under his great-uncle, Gaetano Zanetti, a great cellist. After two years of studying, he joined the theater orchestra, where he played for three months - for ten shillings, half of which his grandfather took. After Zanetti's death, he became a pupil at the ''conservatorio'' of Milan under Vincenzo Merighi. He made his concert debut at 15 and started touring at 16. No one doubted the young virtuoso's skill on the instrument, but he did not draw large crowds. Bernhard Molique
Bernhard Molique (''Wilhelm Bernhard Molique;'' 7 October 180210 May 1869) was a German violinist and composer. Biography He was born in Nuremberg. His father was a musician and the boy studied various instruments, but finally devoted himself to the violin. In 1815, he received some lessons from Louis Spohr, and then studied the violin for two years at the University of Munich under Pietro Rovelli. Career In 1820, Molique succeeded Rovelli as court violinist in Munich and, after several successful tours, in 1826 he became music director at Stuttgart. His pupils there included the violinist Henry Blagrove and the violinist, conductor and composer Alfred Mellon. Molique was well received on a visit to London when he played his own Piano Concerto No 5 on 14 May 1840. He visited England several other times before settling in London from 1849 until 1866. Joseph Joachim
Joseph Joachim (28 June 1831 – 15 August 1907) was a Hungarian violinist, conductor, composer and teacher who made an international career, based in Hanover and Berlin. A close collaborator of Johannes Brahms, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant violinists of the 19th century. Joachim studied violin early, beginning in Buda at age five, then in Vienna and Leipzig. He made his debut in London in 1844, playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Mendelssohn conducting. Ebenezer Prout
Ebenezer Prout (1 March 1835 – 5 December 1909) was an English musical theorist, writer, music teacher and composer, whose instruction, afterwards embodied in a series of standard works still used today, underpinned the work of many British classical musicians of succeeding generations.
