Society Of Black Archaeologists
The Society of Black Archaeologists (SBA) is an international organization of Black archaeologists. The Society was founded in 2012. The founding board members are Drs. Justin Dunnavent, Ayana Omilade Flewellen, Jay Haigler, Alexandra Jones, and Cheryl LaRoche. Mission "The mission of the Society of Black Archaeologists (SBA) is to promote academic excellence and social responsibility by creating a space for Black archaeologists and other scholars who support SBA’s goals and activities". Archaeology
Archaeology or archeology is the scientific study of human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture. The archaeological record consists of artifacts, architecture, biofacts or ecofacts, sites, and cultural landscapes. Archaeology can be considered both a social science and a branch of the humanities. It is usually considered an independent academic discipline, but may also be classified as part of anthropology (in North America – the four-field approach), history or geography. Archaeologists study human prehistory and history, from the development of the first stone tools at Lomekwi in East Africa 3.3 million years ago up until recent decades. Archaeology is distinct from palaeontology, which is the study of fossil remains. Alexandra Jones (archaeologist)
Alexandra Jones is a historical archaeologist and educator. She is founder and chief executive officer of Archaeology in the Community, "a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that aims to increase awareness of archaeology and history." She worked on the PBS television program, Time Team America, as Field Director of Archaeology for in 2013. Early life and education Jones attended Howard University, earning two B.A. degrees in history and anthropology in 2001 and an M.A degree in history in 2003. She earned a Ph.D. in historical archaeology from the University of California, Berkeley While attending Berkeley, Jones participated in a community outreach project that was required of all students. Her outreach participation involved working with a local school, teaching archaeology to sixth grade students. The Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) is a professional organization of scholars concerned with the archaeology of the modern world (15th century-present). Founded in 1967, the SHA promotes scholarly research and the dissemination of knowledge pertaining to historical archaeology. The society is specifically interested in the identification, excavation, interpretation, and conservation of sites and materials on land and underwater. It is the largest such organization in the world and the third largest anthropological organization in the United States. Underwater Archaeology
Underwater archaeology is archaeology practiced underwater. As with all other branches of archaeology, it evolved from its roots in pre-history and in the classical era to include sites from the historical and industrial eras. Its acceptance has been a relatively late development due to the difficulties of accessing and working underwater sites, and because the application of archaeology to underwater sites initially emerged from the skills and tools developed by shipwreck salvagers. As a result, underwater archaeology initially struggled to establish itself as actual archaeological research. This changed when universities began teaching the subject and a theoretical and practical base for the sub-discipline was firmly established in the late 1980’s.
