A professional association (also called a professional body, professional organization, or professional society) usually seeks to advocacy, further a particular profession, the interests of individuals and organisations engaged in that profession, and the public interest. In the United States, such an association is typically a nonprofit organization, nonprofit business league for tax purposes. Imre Simon
Imre Simon (August 14, 1943 – August 13, 2009) was a Hungarian-born Brazilian mathematician and computer scientist. His research mainly focused on theoretical computer science, automata theory, and tropical mathematics, a subject he founded, and which was so named because he lived in Brazil. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He was also actively interested in questions of intellectual property and collaborative work, and was an enthusiastic advocate for open collaborative information systems, of which Wikipedia is an example. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo in 1972, under Janusz Brzozowski with the thesis: ''Hierarchies of Events with Dot-Depth One''. The Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA; en, National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) is widely considered to be the foremost research and educational institution of Brazil in the area of mathematics. It is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and was formerly known simply as ''Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada'', hence its official abbreviation. Marcelo Viana
Marcelo Miranda Viana da Silva (born 4 March 1962) is a Brazilian mathematician working in dynamical systems theory. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1993. He received the TWAS Prize in 1998 and in 2005 he was awarded the inaugural ICTP Ramanujan Prize for his research achievements. Viana was vice-president of the International Mathematical Union in 2011–2014, and president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (2013–2015). In 1998, he was a plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, in Berlin. Viana is director elected of the IMPA (for the period 2016–2019). Viana is a columnist for ''Folha de S.Paulo''. He is the chair of the executive committee for the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians, Rio de Janeiro. Keti Tenenblat
Keti Tenenblat (born 27 November 1944 in Izmir, Turkey) is a Turkish- Brazilian mathematician working on Riemannian geometry, the applications of differential geometry to partial differential equations, and Finsler geometry. Together with Chuu-Lian Terng, she generalized Backlund theorem to higher dimensions. Education She was born in 1944, in Turkey, where she attended elementary and junior high school at an Italian school. In 1957, her family emigrated to Brazil. César Camacho
César Leopoldo Camacho Manco (born 15 April 1943 in Lima, Peru), better known as simply César Camacho, is a Peruvian-born Brazilian mathematician and former director of the IMPA. His area of research is dynamical systems theory. Camacho earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971 under the supervision of Stephen Smale. Aron Simis
Aron Simis is a mathematician born in Recife, Brazil in 1942. He is a full professor at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil, and Class A research scholarship recipient from the Brazilian Research Council. He earned his PhD from Queen's University, Canada. He has previously held a full professorship at IMPA ( Instituto de Matemática Pura e Applicada) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
