The Socialist Party of Connecticut (SPCT) is a socialist political party in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Founded as an affiliate of the Socialist Party of America, the party split with the SPA in 1936 and joined the Social Democratic Federation. In 1957, the Social Democratic Federation reunified with the Socialist Party of America. In 1973, the SPA voted to reform and rename itself Social Democrats, USA, which sought to reform the Democratic Party. The current Socialist Party of Connecticut is the state chapter of the Socialist Party USA. It was reorganized in the 1970s after the formation of the SPUSA by activists who had been members of the Socialist Party of America. Activities SPA and SDF affiliation Jasper McLevy served as mayor of Bridgeport from 1933 to 1957. Prior to becoming mayor, he had run for office nearly two dozen times. Irving Freese
Irving C. Freese (February 19, 1903 – September 11, 1964) was the mayor of Norwalk, Connecticut. Life and family Freese attended a one-room school in East Brunswick, New Jersey, and was graduated from New Brunswick High School. He first came to Norwalk in 1928, while visiting his brother Arnold. He found work as the assistant credit manager at the Norwalk Tire and Rubber Company, as a Johnson & Johnson salesman, as a cost accountant at the American Hat Company, and at the Standard Safety Razor Corporation as a credit manager. He later started a photography business. In October 1933, he met Elizabeth Hutchinson, the niece of the newly elected mayor of nearby Bridgeport, Jasper McLevy at his victory party. Jasper McLevy
Jasper McLevy (March 27, 1878November 20, 1962) was an American politician who served as mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut from 1933 until 1957. He was a member of the Socialist Party, later leaving in protest to join the Social Democratic Federation. Early years Jasper McLevy was born to Scottish immigrants Hugh and Mary Stewart McLevy in Bridgeport on March 27, 1878. McLevy worked first as a roofer, learning the trade from his uncle after his own father died when he was 14. After reading Edward Bellamy's futuristic, utopian novel ''Looking Backward'', he became a socialist, and helped form the Bridgeport Socialist Party in the early 1900s. The 24-year-old idealist first ran for the Connecticut General Assembly under the Socialist banner in 1902, collecting 215 votes. Social Democrats, USA (SDUSA) is a small political association of social democrats founded in 1972. The Socialist Party of America (SPA) had stopped running independent presidential candidates and consequently the term "party" in the SPA's name had confused the public. Replacing the socialist label with "social democrats", was meant to disassociate the ideology of SDUSA with that of the Soviet Union. SDUSA pursued an electoral strategy of political realignment intended to organize labor unions, civil rights organizations and other constituencies into a coalition that would transform the Democratic Party into a social democratic party. The realignment strategy emphasized working with unions and especially the AFL–CIO, putting an emphasis on economic issues that would unite working class voters.
