Socialist Party - Broad Front
The Revolutionary and Democratic Ethical Green Movement (MOVER, es, Movimiento Verde Ético Revolucionario y Democrático) is a centre-left social democratic and environmentalist political party in Ecuador. In 2016, it had 979,691 members. Until 2021 it was known as the PAIS Alliance (Proud and Sovereign Homeland) (PAIS, es, Alianza PAIS (Patria Altiva i Soberana), links=no). Founded by Rafael Correa in April 2006, the party soon found success amid the "pink tide" period in Latin America. The party's early period in power (2007–2017) is known as the Correa era, named after the longtime leader Correa, who was also the President of Ecuador. Correa was highly popular due to his efforts to make the national economy grow and his politics of social spending and social assistance. Rafael Correa
Rafael Vicente Correa Delgado (; born 6 April 1963), known as Rafael Correa, is an Ecuadorian politician and economist who served as President of Ecuador from 2007 to 2017. The leader of the PAIS Alliance political movement from its foundation until 2017, Correa is a democratic socialist and his administration focused on the implementation of left-wing policies. Internationally, he served as president '' pro tempore'' of the UNASUR. Gustavo Larrea is a former Interior Minister of Ecuador who had been appointed in 2006. A commission set up by President Rafael Correa to investigate Operacion Fenix alleged that Larrea had direct links to FARC, which Larrea disputed. The COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 () caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The virus was reported to have spread to Ecuador on 29 February 2020, when a woman in her 70s tested positive for the virus. Ecuador was described in April as emerging as a possible "epicentre" of the pandemic in Latin America, with the city of Guayaquil overwhelmed to the point where bodies were being left in the street. As of April 2020, Ecuador has been distributing cardboard coffins due to the country's struggle in evacuating the dead bodies. Organized protests ceased after indigenous groups and the Ecuadorian government reached a deal to reverse the austerity measures, beginning a collaboration on how to combat overspending and public debt. 2017 Ecuadorian General Election
General elections were held in Ecuador on 19 February 2017 alongside a referendum on tax havens. Voters elected a new President and National Assembly. Incumbent President Rafael Correa of the PAIS Alliance was not eligible for re-election, having served two terms. In the first round of the presidential elections, PAIS Alliance candidate Lenín Moreno received 39% of the vote.
