Social Briars
''Social Briars'' is a 1918 American silent comedy-drama film directed by Henry King and starring Mary Miles Minter. The story was by Jeanne Judson, and it was filmed under the working title of "The Greater Call." As with many of Minter's features, it is thought to be a lost film. Plot As described in various film magazine reviews, Iris Lee (Minter) is an orphan girl who lives in a little country town with Martha Kane (Andrews). She plays the organ and sings at the village Sunday school, where Mrs. Kane's son Jim (Cobb) teaches. Jim is in love with Iris, but Iris dreams of being a famous singer in the city. The only people who take her ambitions seriously are her neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Brown (Abrams and Davenport). One day, Iris packs up and decides to head for the city to seek her fame and fortune. Anne Schaefer
Anne Schaefer (July 10, 1870 – May 3, 1957) was an American actress. She appeared in 147 films between 1911 and 1938. She was the aunt of fellow actresses Eva and Jane Novak. Schaefer was born to German parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schafer, on July 10, 1870, in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Notre Dame Convent school in St. Louis. She also studied at a dramatic school founded by Lawrence Hanley in St. Louis and acted in his summer stock company. After acting on stage for several years, she signed with the Vitagraph film company. Frank Whitson (March 22, 1877 – March 19, 1946) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1915 and 1937. He was born in New York, New York, and died in Los Angeles, California. Whitson performed in vaudeville and in stock theater before he began working in films. Milla Davenport
Milla Davenport (February 4, 1871 in Zurich – May 17, 1936) was an American stage and film actress who first appeared with the repertory company of her husband, actor Harry J. Davenport (1870-1929), for fifteen years. Davenport then began a career in motion pictures in the silent film ''Trapping the Bachelor'' (1916). She was in '' Daddy-Long-Legs'' (1919) with Mary Pickford, ''The Brat'' (1919) with Nazimova, '' Sins of the Fathers'' (1928) with Emil Jannings, and ''The Wedding Night'' (1935). Davenport continued to make movies well into the sound film era. Her last film credits are for roles in ''The Defense Rests'' (1934), ''Here Comes Cookie'' (1935), and an uncredited part in '' Human Cargo'' (1936). Davenport died in Los Angeles, California in 1936, aged 65. She was buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Claire Du Brey
Claire Du Brey (born Clara Violet Dubreyvich, August 31, 1892 – August 1, 1993) was an American actress. She appeared in more than 200 films between 1916 and 1959. Her name is sometimes rendered as Claire Du Bray or as Claire Dubrey. Early years Du Brey was born in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, to an ethnic Croat father from Dalmatia (who anglicized his name to Matthew Dubrey before his marriage), and an Irish-American mother, Lilly (née Henry), later Mrs. Richard Fugitt. Her parents married on November 9, 1891 in Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho. She was raised Catholic and attended a convent school. Du Brey "had trained as a nurse". She related that in 1897 she traveled west from Idaho in a covered wagon with her mother and her grandfather. Career Du Brey's screen career began with Universal Studios and she played at one time or another with almost all the larger companies.
