Social-Democratic Party Of Abkhazia
The Social-Democratic Party of Abkhazia (russian: Социал-демократическая партия Абхазии; ka, სოციალურ დემოკრატიული პარტიის აფხაზეთის, tr) is an oppositional political party in Abkhazia. It was founded during the crisis that followed the October 2004 presidential election by people from the presidential campaign of Sergei Shamba, who had come third in the election. Besides Shamba himself, initial members included his vice presidential candidate Vladimir Arshba, chief of staff Gennady Alamia and former vice premier Albert Topolian. The foundational congress of the Social-Democratic Party took place on 15 October 2005 in the State Drama Theatre of Abkhazia, where Gennadi Alamia was elected its first chairman. Gennady Alamia
Gennady Shalikovich Alamia (Lomiya) (russian: Геннадий Шаликович Аламиа (Ломия); born 24 June 1949 in Kutol, Abkhazia) is an Abkhazian politician, poet and playwright. He is the chairman of the Social-Democratic Party of Abkhazia and secretary-general of the World Congress of the Abkhaz-Abaza People. He is also editor of '' Circassian World'' magazine. While studying at the Literary Institute of the Writer's Union of the Soviet Union, he met his future translator and co-author Denis Chachkhalia. During Perestroika, Alamia led Aidgylara's eponymous newspaper and penned "Aiaaira", which became the National Anthem of Abkhazia. Abkhazian Presidential Election, 2005
Presidential elections were held in Abkhazia on 12 January 2005. The result was a victory for Sergei Bagapsh of United Abkhazia, who received over 90% of the vote. Background A Presidential election had been held in Abkhazia on 3 October, but had resulted in a prolonged conflict over the results between the two main contenders, Raul Khadjimba, who had been Prime Minister and who was backed by the seriously ailing outgoing President Vladislav Ardzinba and by Russia, and Sergei Bagapsh, the main opposition candidate who had received a narrow majority of the votes. Political parties tend to not have stable ideological platforms, and as such, party actions and support tend to depend on the attitudes/beliefs of the party leader. Raul Jumkovich Khajimba ( ab, Рауль Џьумка-иҧа Ҳаџьымба, ka, რაულ ჯუმკას-ძე ჰაჯიმბა; born 21 March 1958) is an Abkhazian politician, and served as President of Abkhazia from 25 September 2014 until 12 January 2020. He was also Chairman of the Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia from 2010 to 2015. Khajimba previously held the offices of Vice President (2005–2009), Prime Minister (2003–2004) and Defence Minister (2002–2003). He unsuccessfully ran for President in 2004, 2009 and 2011. Sergei Uasyl-ipa Bagapsh, ka, სერგეი ბაგაფში, russian: Сергей Васильевич Багапш, translit=Sergey Vasilyevich Bagapsh (4 March 1949 – 29 May 2011) was an Abkhaz politician who served as the second President of Abkhazia from 12 February 2005 until his death on 29 May 2011. He previously served as Prime Minister of Abkhazia from 1997 to 1999. He was re-elected in the 2009 presidential election. Abkhazian State University
The Abkhazian State University is the only university in Abkhazia. It was founded in 1979 on the basis of the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute. Its first rector was Zurab Anchabadze. The university consists the departments of physics and mathematics, biology and geography, history, philology, economics, law; pedagogical and agro-engineering departments. The first college in Abkhazia, the ''Sukhumi Agro-pedagogical Institute'' was founded in 1932 and transformed into the ''Maxim Gorky Pedagogical Institute'' the following year.
