''So This Is London'' is a comedy play by the American writer Arthur Goodrich, first staged in 1922. Comedy is a genre of dramatic performance having a light or humorous tone that depicts amusing incidents and in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity. For ancient Greeks and Romans, a comedy was a stage-play with a happy ending. In the Middle Ages, the term expanded to include narrative poems with happy endings and a lighter tone. In this sense Dante used the term in the title of his poem, the ''Divine Comedy'' (Italian: ''Divina Commedia''). The phenomena connected with laughter and that which provokes it have been carefully investigated by psychologists. The predominating characteristics are incongruity or contrast in the object, and shock or emotional seizure on the part of the subject. Arthur Frederick Goodrich (February 18, 1878 – June 26, 1941) was an American novelist and playwright who was prominent on Broadway theatre, Broadway during the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote a mixture of crime and comedy plays. One of his greatest hits was the 1922 Anglo-American culture clash comedy ''So This Is London (play), So This Is London'', which was turned into films twice. Will Rogers
William Penn Adair Rogers (November 4, 1879 – August 15, 1935) was an American vaudeville performer, actor, and humorous social commentator. He was born as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, in the Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma), and is known as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son". As an entertainer and humorist, he traveled around the world three times, made 71 films (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), and wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s, Rogers was hugely popular in the United States for his leading political wit and was the highest paid of Hollywood film stars. He died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post when their small airplane crashed in northern Alaska. Rogers began his career as a performer on vaudeville. Irene Rich (born Irene Frances Luther; October 13, 1891 – April 22, 1988) was an American actress who worked in both silent films and talkies, as well as radio. Early life Rich was born in Buffalo, New York. At age 17, she wed Elvo Elcourt Deffenbaugh at All Saints' Cathedral in Spokane, Washington on February 17, 1909, after her parents talked about sending her to boarding school. The couple had one child, born Irene Frances Luther Deffenbaugh, who later adopted her stepfather's surname and was a stage and film actress in the 1930s known as Frances Rich before becoming a noted sculptor. Alfred Drayton
Alfred Drayton (1 November 1881 – 26 April 1949) was a British stage and film actor. Drayton worked in a brewery when he was 18 but having a good deal of amateur dramatics experience decided to go on stage. His first appearance on stage was ''The Beloved Vagabond'' at Cardiff in 1908 and his London debut was at the Haymarket Theatre the following year. He featured in several West End plays before going into films, including ''Bulldog Drummond'' (1921) and ''Dear Brutus'' in 1922. On both screen and stage he had a successful partnership with the actor Robertson Hare a veteran of the Aldwych Farces. He was appearing with Hare in the play ''One Wild Oat'' at the Garrick Theatre at the time of his death in 1949.
