"So Far Away" is a song by British rock band Dire Straits, the opening track on their fifth studio album '' Brothers in Arms'' (1985). It became the band's fourth top 20 hit, peaking at number 19. The original studio version of the track appeared on the 2005 compilation '' The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations''. Reception ''Cash Box'' said that "with a punchy guitar hook tshould walk right into the Top 10." Single release "So Far Away" was the lead single from ''Brothers in Arms'' in the UK and Europe on 12 April 1985. Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). Justin William Wells (born August 11, 1982) is an American country music and roots rock singer-songwriter. Wells has released two solo albums as well as four albums as singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist for former Lexington, Kentucky alternative country/southern rock band Fifth on the Floor. ''The Ragpicker's Dream'' is the third solo studio album by British singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler, released on 30 September 2002 by Mercury Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The album received generally favorable reviews upon its release. Composition The album is a collection of songs written from the point of view of poor but dignified itinerant men, struggling to get by in life, often enjoying small triumphs. Knopfler gives a folk imprint to the whole album without relying too heavily on the acoustic guitar. The first song, "Why Aye Man", was used as the theme tune for the third series of ''Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'' which first aired in 2002. "Sultans of Swing" is a song by British rock band Dire Straits, written by lead vocalist Mark Knopfler. The demo of the song was recorded at Pathway Studios, North London, in July 1977 and quickly acquired a following after it was put in rotation on BBC Radio London. Its popularity soon reached record executives, and Dire Straits were offered a contract with Phonogram Records. The song was then re-recorded in February 1978 at Basing Street Studios for the band's eponymous debut album. The B-side, "Eastbound Train", is a live track that otherwise only appears on the '' Live at the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival'' album.
