Snowflake (prison)
Federal Governmental Institution — penal colony No. 6 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in Khabarovsk Krai, commonly known as the Snowflake (russian: Снежинка, ''Snezhinka''), is a prison in Elban, Khabarovsk Krai, Russia. It is a supermax corrective labor colony operated by the Federal Penitentiary Service for convicts sentenced to life imprisonment. The Snowflake appears to be the newest prison of the seven prisons of this type in Russia. The Snowflake became the first and only prison for life prisoners in the Far East. In 1996, the construction of a pre-trial detention center with a capacity of 800 beds was started in its place. The facility was completed in 2012, put into operation in early 2014. The nickname of the prison comes from the seven-beam shape of its buildings. Khabarovsk Krai ( rus, Хабаровский край, r=Khabarovsky kray, p=xɐˈbarəfskʲɪj kraj) is a federal subject (a krai) of Russia. It is geographically located in the Russian Far East and is a part of the Far Eastern Federal District. The administrative centre of the krai is the city of Khabarovsk, which is home to roughly half of the krai's population and the largest city in the Russian Far East (just ahead of Vladivostok). Life Imprisonment In Russia
Life imprisonment in Russia was introduced on December 17, 1992, by the law 4123-I. Courts could not sentence criminals to life imprisonment at that time. Only those who had been sentenced to death penalty could have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. When the new Criminal Code of Russia was adopted in 1996, life imprisonment became a separate punishment. Overview Article 57 part 2 of the Criminal Code of Russia forbids women, men that were below the age of 18 at the time of the offense and men that were over the age of 65 at sentencing from being sentenced to life imprisonment. If the offender was below the age of 18 at the time of the offense, the maximum sentence is 10 years' imprisonment. The maximum sentence for women in Russia is 20 years imprisonment. Far East
The ''Far East'' was a European term to refer to the geographical regions that includes East and Southeast Asia as well as the Russian Far East to a lesser extent. Yevgeny Alexandrovich Chuplinsky (russian: Евге́ний Алекса́ндрович Чупли́нский; born March 14, 1965), known as The Novosibirsk Maniac (russian: Новосибирский маньяк), is a Russian serial killer who killed at least 19 prostitutes in the Novosibirsk Oblast from 1998 to 2005. The murders were accompanied by dismemberment, extensive mutilations and removal of victims' hearts. Despite large-scale investigations by police and several arrests, Chuplinsky was only arrested in 2016, and sentenced to life imprisonment two years later. Vladimir Viktorovich Mirgorod (russian: Владимир Викторович Миргород; born November 1, 1979), known as The Strangler (russian: Душитель), is a Russian serial killer who killed 18 people from 2002 to 2004. He was detained in 2010, when his fingerprints matched with those found at the crime scenes. In 2012, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Biography Mirgorod was born in Moscow in 1979. He lived in the Timiryazevsky District, in the metro area Petrovsko-Razumovskaya. After finishing school, he entered MISiS, but left soon after finding a good job. His friends spoke only positively of him. Mirgorod committed the first murder in January 2003, killing a 25-year-old from Minsk in her own apartment, stealing valuables from her house.
