Snowflake is a small community in the Municipality of Pembina in Manitoba, Canada near the Canada–United States border. It is the birthplace of ice hockey player Justin Falk, and was the first ecclesiastical posting for the sixth Bishop of Calgary, George Reginald Calvert. The Municipality of Pembina is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. History The municipality was incorporated on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RM of Pembina and the Town of Manitou. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. The Government of Manitoba initiated these amalgamations in order for municipalities to meet the 1997 minimum population requirement of 1,000 to incorporate a municipality. Hannah–Snowflake Border Crossing
The Hannah–Snowflake Border Crossing connects the towns of Hannah, North Dakota and Snowflake, Manitoba on the Canada–United States border. It is connected by 91st Avenue NE in Cavalier County, North Dakota on the American side and Provincial Road 242 in the Municipality of Louise, Manitoba on the Canadian side. Both Hannah and Snowflake once were thriving small farm communities, and both rapidly declined in population when their respective railroads were abandoned. The BNSF rail line now terminates in Langdon, North Dakota and Hannah's population has declined from 253 in 1960 to 15 in 2010. The population of Snowflake is now 2. LeMoine FitzGerald
Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald D.F.A., also known as L. L. FitzGerald (March 17, 1890 – August 5, 1956) was a Canadian artist and art educator. He was the only member of the Group of Seven based in western Canada. He worked almost exclusively in Manitoba, where he captured the essence of the prairie in his art. Although he accepted the Group of Seven’s invitation to become a member in 1932, FitzGerald was less concerned than the rest of the group with the promotion of a unified Canadian identity. Instead he explored his surroundings, delving deeply into the forces he felt animated and united nature in order to make “the picture a living thing.” His landscapes and still lifes were drawn from his immediate surroundings—the view of the back lane outside his house; a potted plant on the windowsill. George Reginald Calvert
George Reginald Calvert (11 October 1900 – 18 March 1976) was the fourth Bishop of Calgary in the Anglican Church of Canada. Calvert was educated at the University of Toronto and ordained in 1925. He was the incumbent of Snowflake, Manitoba and then Rector of Holland, Killarney and West Kildonan before becoming Archdeacon of Winnipeg. From 1949 to 1952 he was Rector of Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, British Columbia and Dean of Columbia before being ordained to the episcopate. Justin Falk
Justin Falk (born October 11, 1988) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He last played with the Belleville Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL). He made his National Hockey League debut in the 2009–10 season with the Minnesota Wild, and has since played for the New York Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Buffalo Sabres. Justin is the current General Manager and Head Coach for the Winkler Flyers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Playing career Falk was a member of the Spokane Chiefs team that won both the Western Hockey League championship and the Memorial Cup in 2008, and was named to the tournament all-star team.
