Snowball Clause
The ''snowball clause'' is one way that editors are encouraged to exercise common sense and avoid pointy, bureaucratic behavior. The snowball clause states: The snowball clause is designed to prevent editors from getting tangled up in long, mind-numbing, bureaucratic discussions over things that are foregone conclusions. For example, if an article is speedily deleted for the wrong reason (the reason was not within the criteria for speedy deletion), but the article has no chance of surviving the normal deletion process, it would be pointless to resurrect the article and force everyone to go through the motions of deleting it again. The snowball clause is not policy, and there are sometimes good reasons for pushing ahead against the flames anyway; well-aimed snowballs have, on rare occasions, made it through the inferno to reach their marks. The clause should be seen as a polite request not to waste everyone's time. What the snowball clause is not An uphill battle is extre ...

Early years Pendleton, born on 13 September 1818, was educated at the University of Ghent and at St Aidan's College, Birkenhead. While in Ghent his portrait was painted by Ford Madox Brown; this is now in Manchester Art Gallery. After being ordained in the diocese of Winchester, he served as curate of St Martin's, Guernsey, from December 1849 to June 1851, and as senior curate of St Helier, Jersey, from August 1851 to July 1853. Work with the Waldensians He was consular chaplain to the British residents at Montevideo, Uruguay from 6 May 1854 to 31 December 1858. During his residence there 150 Protestant Waldensians, impelled by the scarcity of employment in Piedmont, left their native country and landed in Montevideo. They were followed in 1858 by about a hundred more, when the whole party settled at Florida, about sixty miles from the city. Jesuit opposition arose and t ...

Snow (Beattie Short Story)
"Snow" (1986) is a neorealist short story by Ann Beattie. The story is told by an unnamed female narrator who recounts the story of the time she spent in the country with her former lover. As though she is speaking directly to her former lover she recalls, in great detail, the landscape of the area and some of the events of the winter they spent together. Plot summary The story begins with the narrator describing a cold night where her lover unknowingly brings a chipmunk into the house whilst bringing in fire wood, it rushes towards the front door as though it knew this was its path to escape. The house is said to have a library, fireplace and wallpaper depicting purple grapes. The walls are repainted yellow and the narrator imagines the grapes as alive; growing and bursting through the paint. The day of the "big snow" comes and the narrator is reminded of her lover shoveling the driveway; he wraps a towel around his head "like a crazy king of snow". Those who lived nearby admir ...

Once the snow begins to bury even the highest buildings, she meets a worker from the London Underground The London Underground (also known simply as the Underground or by its nickname the Tube) is a rapid transit system serving Greater London and some parts of the adjacent ceremonial counties of England, counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex and He ... and they both survive by sheltering in a high-rise office building and living off supplies that they have cached and can forage for. The worker later dies after falling off a chair and breaking his ...

Snow (Pamuk Novel)
''Snow'' ( tr, Kar) is a novel by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk. Published in Turkish in 2002, it was translated into English by Maureen Freely and published in 2004. The story encapsulates many of the political and cultural tensions of modern Turkey and successfully combines humor, social commentary, mysticism, and a deep sympathy with its characters. ''Kar'' is the word for Snow, but the main character also abbreviates his name to Ka (his initials), with the novel set in the eastern Turkish city of Kars. An opening (and recurring) theme concerns reasons behind a suicide epidemic among teenage girls (which actually took place in the city of Batman). Plot summary Though most of the early part of the story is told in the third person from Ka's point of view, an omniscient narrator sometimes makes his presence known, posing as a friend of Ka's who is telling the story based on Ka's journals and correspondence. This narrator sometimes provides the reader with information before Ka kno ...
