SCIRA is the acronym by which the Snipe Class International Racing Association is known. Sailing (sport)
The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. Most competitions are held within defined classes or ratings that either entail one type of sailing craft to ensure a contest primarily of skill or rating the sailing craft to create classifications or handicaps. Birger Jansen
Birger Jansen (7 January 1948 – 7 November 2016) was a Norwegian ice hockey player and sailor. He was born in Bærum and represented the clubs Jar IL and IF Frisk Asker. He played for the Norwegian national ice hockey team, and participated at the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972, where the Norwegian team placed 8th out of 11 teams. He was European champion in the Snipe class in 2000, Masters World Champion in 1996, and many times Norwegian champion. He also placed third at the 1991 Snipe Worlds. Richard L. Tillman, known as Dick Tillman, (November 27, 1936 – October 14, 2020) was an American sailor. He was a member of the United States sailing team at the 1976 Summer Olympics as an alternate and was named US Sailor of the Year in 1965. He started sailing as a teenager at Wawasee Yacht Club crewing for Alan (Buzz) Levinson, his older brother Frank and his younger brother, Harry, in their Snipes.
