Snap! (album)
''Snap!'' is a greatest hits album by The Jam, released on 14 October 1983, one year after the group disbanded. The double-album includes all sixteen of the band's UK singles, plus some B-sides, album tracks and rarities. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "one of the ''greatest'' greatest-hits albums of all time".AllMusic review/ref> A shorter version, removing the 8 non-singles, was released as a single CD in 1985 as ''Compact Snap!''. Editions Initial quantities of the album included a limited edition 4 track EP, ''Live'', recorded at Wembley Arena during the farewell tour of 1982. Featuring the tracks " Get Yourself Together", "Move On Up", "The Great Depression" and "But I'm Different Now", the EP is notable for the fact that these songs were never re-issued on any other Jam compilation. The Jam
The Jam were an English mod revival/ punk rock band formed in 1972 at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, Surrey. They released 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four number one hits. As of 2007, " That's Entertainment" and "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?" remain the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. They released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, '' The Gift'', reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. When the group disbanded in 1982, their first 15 singles were re-released and all placed within the top 100. Going Underground
"Going Underground" is a single by The Jam, released in March 1980. It debuted at number one in the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks at the top. "Going Underground" was the first of four number one singles the band were to achieve throughout their career. Song profile "Going Underground" was not released on any of the band's six studio albums, although it has appeared on many compilations and re-releases since the 1980s. The song was released as a double A-side with "Dreams of Children", which originally had been intended to be the sole A-side; following a mix-up at the pressing plant, the single became a double A-side, and DJs tended to choose the more melodic "Going Underground" to play on the radio. The Eton Rifles
"The Eton Rifles" is a song written by Paul Weller. It was recorded by The Jam, and was the only song to be released as a single from that group's album ''Setting Sons''. Released on 26 October 1979, it became the band's first top-ten hit on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at No. 3. This is the only official Jam single for which a video was not recorded. The song was recorded at Townhouse Studios, and produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and The Jam. The single's B-side is "See-Saw". "Strange Town" is a 1979 single by the Jam. The single was released on 9 March 1979 and reached No. 15 in the UK Singles Chart on 8 April. In 1983 it was certified Silver for 250,000 sales This single, backed by the Paul Weller-penned "The Butterfly Collector", only appeared on one of the band's studio albums, the Canadian Polydor pressing of ''Setting Sons''. "Strange Town" also appears on the greatest hits album ''Snap!'' "The Butterfly Collector" also appears in the 1996 '' The Jam Collection'' compilation album as well as on ''Snap!'' The start of the promotional video for the single was filmed at the entrance to the underground section of London Victoria station. "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" is a single by The Jam, and was the second single from their third album, '' All Mod Cons''. Released in October 1978, it reached No. 15 in the UK Singles Chart. The single was backed by a cover version of The Who's song "So Sad About Us", and the song "The Night", written by Bruce Foxton. Production Originally Paul Weller had wanted to exclude the song from the ''All Mod Cons'' album, on the grounds that the arrangement had not sufficiently developed during the recording sessions. ''All Mod Cons'' is the third studio album by the British band The Jam, released in 1978 by Polydor Records. The title, a British idiom one might find in housing advertisements, is short for "all modern conveniences" and is a pun on the band's association with the mod revival. "Aunties and Uncles (Impulsive Youths)" and "Innocent Man" appeared as its B-sides. The title refers to the former British tabloid newspaper, ''News of the World''. "News of the World" is not included on any of the band's studio albums. It was written and sung by bass guitarist Bruce Foxton rather than the band's usual frontman Paul Weller.
