Snaith Hall
Snaith is a market town and parish in the civil parish of Snaith and Cowick in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The town is close to the River Aire and the M62 and M18 motorways. The town is located west of Goole, east of Knottingley, south of Selby, southwest of Howden and northwest of Thorne. The town's population is 3,176 while the civil parish population is 3,865 History The name "Snaith" derives from the Old Scandinavian word ''sneith'', meaning "Piece of land cut off". The name was recorded in its modern-day form in but in the '' Domesday Book'' of 1086, it was recorded as ''Esneid''. The priory church of St Lawrence is low and wide, with pinnacles. Its core is Norman and cruciform but the tower is Early English and stands at the west end. The chancel is Decorated Gothic and the nave has Perpendicular arcades and a high clerestory. Snaith and Cowick is a civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately west of the town of Goole and covers an area of . The civil parish is formed by the town of Snaith and the villages of East Cowick and West Cowick. A pinnacle is an architectural element originally forming the cap or crown of a buttress or small turret, but afterwards used on parapets at the corners of towers and in many other situations. Francis Chantrey
Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey (7 April 1781 – 25 November 1841) was an English sculptor. He became the leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time. Chantrey's most notable works include the statues of King George IV (Trafalgar Square); King George III (Guildhall), and George Washington (Massachusetts State House). He also executed four monuments to military heroes for St Paul's Cathedral, London. John Dawnay, 5th Viscount Downe
John Christopher Burton Dawnay, 5th Viscount Downe (15 November 1764 – 18 February 1832), styled The Honourable John Dawnay until 1780, was a British Whig politician. Dawnay was the eldest son of John Dawnay, 4th Viscount Downe, by Laura, daughter of William Burton, of Luffenham, Rutland. He succeeded his father in the viscountcy in 1780. However, as this was an Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the English House of Lords. He subsequently sat as Member of Parliament for Petersfield between 1787 and 1790 and for Wootton Basset between 1790 and 1796. Francis Spear
Francis Howard Spear (22 December 1902 in South Norwood, London – 7 November 1979) was an English stained glass artist and lithographer. He produced more than 300 stained glass windows in over 130 public locations, including six cathedrals. On leaving school in Battersea, Spear attended the London County Council Central School of Arts & Crafts, graduating in Industrial Design (with a specialisation in stained glass) in 1923. His graphic design talents were exemplified by three posters for London Tramways which he produced while at the Central School in 1923. He went on to win a National Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art, gaining a Diploma from the Design School in 1926. An arcade is a succession of contiguous arches, with each arch supported by a colonnade of columns or piers. Exterior arcades are designed to provide a sheltered walkway for pedestrians. In church architecture, the chancel is the space around the altar, including the choir and the sanctuary (sometimes called the presbytery), at the liturgical east end of a traditional Christian church building.
