An endplay (also ''throw-in''), in bridge and similar games, is a tactical play where a defender is put on lead at a strategic moment, and then has to make a play that loses one or more tricks. Most commonly the losing play either constitutes a free finesse, or else it gives declarer a ruff and discard. In a case where declarer has no entries to dummy (or to his own hand), the defender may also be endplayed into leading a suit which can be won in that hand. Example For example, South is declarer in 6 and West leads the diamond king. If the adverse spades are divided 2-1, there are 12 certain tricks (six spade tricks, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs) and the possibility of a 13th by correctly guessing the two-way finesse (or dropping the queen) in hearts. A dummy hand or ghost player is an imaginary extra player in a card game, used to make a game more challenging, as a special hand in a game or to compensate for a missing player. A ghost player can take the place of a human player either as a dead hand (their cards or pieces are not used in the game), or under the control of another player. In some games the dummy hand is revealed face-up. Dead hand In the case of card games and tile games the ghost player is dealt cards or tiles which are subsequently not used in the game (which are considered dead cards). The ghost player does not participate in the game, reveal their hand or score any points. Loser On Loser
Loser on loser play is a type of declarer's play in contract bridge, usually in trump contracts, where the declarer discards a loser card (the one that is bound to be given up anyway) on an opponent's winner, instead of ruffing. Loser on loser technique can be executed for the following goals: #to maintain trump control of the hand, #to transfer the ruff to a "safer" suit (e.g. in order to perform a later crossruff). #as part of an avoidance play (e.g. the scissors coup) #to rectify the count for a subsequent squeeze play. #as part of an endplay. Devil's Coup
The Devil's Coup is a declarer play in contract bridge that prevents the defense from taking an apparently natural trump trick – often called ''"the disappearing trump trick"''. Example A typical example is shown where spades are trumps and the lead is in dummy (North). The 3 is led. If East ruffs low, then declarer overruffs low and cashes the ace and king of spades. If East ruffs high, declarer overruffs with the K and finesses West for the Q to make the remaining two tricks. Trump Coup
The trump coup is a contract bridge coup used when the hand on lead (typically the dummy) has no trumps remaining, while the next hand in rotation has only trumps, including a high one that would have been onside for a direct finesse if a trump could have been led. The play involves forcing that hand to ruff, only to be overruffed. A similar motive is met in coup en passant, where indirect finesse is used instead of direct. In an earlier text by George S. Coffin, The first edition of ''Endplays'' was published in 1932. he names the trump coup as an "Overruff Finesse Endplay".
