Smoky Cape Lighthouse
Smoky Cape Lighthouse is a heritage-listed active lighthouse located on Smoky Cape, a headland in Arakoon east of the town of South West Rocks, Kempsey Shire, New South Wales, Australia, and within the Hat Head National Park. It directs boats towards the entrance to the Macleay River, which is located just to the north of the lighthouse. It is one of the last major lighthouse complexes designed by the New South Wales colonial architect of the time, James Barnet, and was one of Australia's last lighthouses to be designed for architectural excellence. Standing on a granite headland above the sea, its light is the highest in New South Wales. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Smoky Cape is a headland in Australia on the New South Wales Mid-North Coast. It lies just east of the town of South West Rocks, New South Wales, South West Rocks, and within the Hat Head National Park. Cape The cape was named ''Smoky Cape'' by James Cook, Captain Cook when he passed it on 13 May 1770, writing of "a point or headland, on which were fires that Caused a great Quantity of smook, which occasioned my giving it the name of Smooky Cape". ''Smook'' was his usual spelling of ''smoke'', the spelling for the cape now follows the modern spelling. The hills there were an important meeting place for aboriginal people from various surrounding areas, it's possible Cook saw fires from such a gathering. Green Cape Lighthouse
The Green Cape Lighthouse is a heritage-listed lighthouse located at the tip of Green Cape, a headland forming the northern boundary of Disaster Bay, in southern New South Wales, Australia. It is the southernmost lighthouse in New South Wales and Australia's first lighthouse built in concrete. At it is also the tallest lighthouse in New South Wales. It marks Green Cape on the northerly shore-hugging sailing course. The lighthouse was designed by James Barnet and built from 1881 to 1883 by Albert Wood Aspinall. South Solitary Island Light
South Solitary Island Light is an active lighthouse on South Solitary Island, an island within the Solitary Islands Marine Park, about northeast of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse is located at the summit of the island. It is considered the most isolated lighthouse on the New South Wales coast. It was first in New South Wales to use kerosene over colza oil, and the last to do so before converting to electric power. History Suggestions for a lighthouse near Coffs Harbour were made as early as 1856, with locations proposed on either North Solitary Island or South Solitary Island. Green Cape, New South Wales
Green Cape is a locality situated on the eponymous headland or cape on the far south coast of New South Wales. It is located at 37° 15' S 150° 03' E, within Beowa National Park, south of Eden, New South Wales. The headland forms the northern boundary of Disaster Bay. History The first vessel recorded shipwrecked at Green Cape was the ''City of Sydney'' which struck the cape in fog on 6 October 1862 with more than 100 passengers on board. All passengers and crew boarded lifeboats and made it safely ashore. The Green Cape Lighthouse, the southernmost lighthouse in New South Wales, completed in 1883, was mostly constructed by Albert Aspinall, who constructed a wooden tramway from the nearest landfall at Bittangabee Bay for the purpose. Montague Island (Australia)
Montague Island (Barunguba) is a continental island contained within the Montague Island Nature Reserve, a protected nature reserve that is located offshore from the South Coast region of New South Wales, in eastern Australia. The nearest town located onshore from the reserve and island is , situated approximately to the northwest. History The island has been known to the local group of Yuin people, an Aboriginal nation, as Barunguba, and there are Aboriginal sites of significance across the island. It features in Aboriginal mythology, as the eldest son of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), the mother.
