Smoky (1966 Film)
''Smoky'' is a 1966 American Western film, directed by George Sherman and starring Fess Parker, Diana Hyland, Katy Jurado and Hoyt Axton. The third of three film adaptations of the 1926 novel ''Smoky the Cowhorse'' by Will James, it utilizes the screenplay from the 1946 film. It earned rentals in the US and Canada of $4 million. Synopsis A cowboy finds, captures, and patiently trains a black wild stallion. They develop a bond that is ultimately unbreakable. The cowboy's brother, however, needing money to pay off gambling debts signed in his brother's name, tries to trade the horse sneakily. While trying to sneak him out of his pen at night, the horse senses something is wrong and struggles against the brother and in the process accidentally kills him, before running off. The cowboy goes looking for him, fearing others will kill the horse over its reputation. Sadly he does not find him. George Sherman
George Sherman (July 14, 1908 – March 15, 1991) was an American film director and producer of low-budget Western films. One obituary said his "credits rival in number those of anyone in the entertainment industry." Biography George Sherman was born in New York City on July 14, 1908. At age 14 he sailed aboard the SS ''Mongolia'' to Los Angeles, California, where he found work in the mail room at Warner Bros. studios via a film editor friend. Sherman was credited for working on props on '' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'' (1928). Mack Sennett He worked as an assistant director on the Mack Sennett comedy ''The Lion and the House'' (1932), then the short feature ''Hypnotized'' (1932). Chuck Roberson
Charles Hugh Roberson (May 10, 1919 – June 8, 1988) was an American actor and stuntman. Biography Roberson was born near Shannon, Texas, the son of farmer Ollie W. Roberson and Jannie Hamm Roberson. Raised on cattle ranches in Shannon, Texas, and Roswell, New Mexico, he left school at 13 to become a cowhand and oilfield roughneck. He married and took his wife and daughter to California, where he joined the Culver City Police Department and guarded the gate at MGM studios. Following army service in World War II, he returned to the police force. During duty at Warner Bros. studios during a labor strike, he met stuntman Guy Teague, who alerted him to a stunt job at Republic Pictures. Teague had been John Wayne's stunt double for many years and was able to show him the ropes. Chuck also resembled John Carrol whom Roberson doubled in his first picture, ''Wyoming'' (1947).
