The Smiths Falls Beavers were a professional baseball team that played for one season in 1937, in Smiths Falls, Ontario. The team played as part of the Canadian–American League. Two players from the single-season team made it to the major leagues. Matt Christopher, the well-known author of over a hundred sports books for young adults, made the team out of training camp, but was released early in the season. Smiths Falls, Ontario
Smiths Falls is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada, southwest of Ottawa. As of the Canada 2021 Census, 2021 census it has a population of 9,254. It is in the Census division for Lanark County, but is separated from the county. The Rideau Canal waterway passes through the town, with four separate locks in three locations and a combined lift of over . The town's name was previously spelled Smith's Falls, and the spelling Smith Falls has been used, but "Smiths Falls" is now the official correct form. History Early history and naming Smiths Falls was incorporated first as a village in 1854, and then as a town in 1882. It is named after Thomas Smyth, a United Empire Loyalist who in 1786 was granted in what is present-day Smiths Falls. The Heritage House (Smiths Falls, Ontario), Heritage House Museum (c. 1862), also known as the Ward House, was designated under the ''Ontario Heritage Act'' in 1977. Xavier Rescigno
Xavier Frederick Rescigno (October 13, 1912 – December 24, 2005) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1943 to 1945. The , right-hander was a native of New York, New York. He attended St. Ann's Academy in Manhattan, New York. Rescigno is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He started out as a member of the New York Yankees's farm system, and was notably a member of the 1937 Newark Bears squad that is often mentioned as one of the greatest minor league teams in history, but he had difficulty working his way into a spot on the deep Yankee roster. The enrollment of many players in the armed forces brought opportunity, however, and at the age of 30, Rescigno made his major league debut as a relief pitcher for the Pirates against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 22, 1943. Walt Lanfranconi
Walter Oswald Lanfranconi (November 9, 1916 – August 17, 1986) was a Major League Baseball pitcher. The 155 lb. right-hander played for the Chicago Cubs (1941) and Boston Braves (1947). His career was unusual in that he went almost six years between major league appearances. Lanfranconi made his major league debut in relief against the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field (September 12, 1941). Twelve days later he started and lost 2–0 to All-Star Bucky Walters and the Cincinnati Reds. Then, as a 30-year-old in 1947, he went 4–4 with one save as a starter and reliever for the Braves. In one of his best games, he defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7–1 in the nightcap of a 4th of July double-header at Shibe Park with 28,580 fans in attendance. Lanfranconi's career totals include a record of 4–5 in 38 games, 70 innings pitched, 19 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.96.
