Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area
Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area is a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Bedford and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia. Located on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake, the WMA is owned by Appalachian Power and cooperatively managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation through a conservation easement that permits public access. History The area was established in January 2009 when a conservation easement was donated by Appalachian Power to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. The land was first acquired by Appalachian Power in the 1950s during the construction of the Smith Mountain Dam hydroelectric project. Bedford County, Virginia
Bedford County is a United States county located in the Piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its county seat is the town of Bedford, which was an independent city from 1968 until rejoining the county in 2013. Bedford County was created in 1753 from parts of Lunenburg County, and several changes in alignment were made until the present borders were established in 1786. Bourassa State Forest
Bourassa State Forest is a state forest located in Bedford County, Virginia, north of Smith Mountain Lake. It is used primarily for timber production, as an outdoor lab, and as a wildlife sanctuary. The forest is adjacent to the Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area. Bourassa State Forest is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Forestry. Virginia Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are state-managed protected areas that exist primarily for the benefit of wildlife.
