Smith Creek (Chattahoochee River)
Smith Creek is a stream in White County of the American state of Georgia, and is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. Course Smith Creek rises in the very northeastern corner of White County, Georgia, where White County meets Habersham County, on the western edge of Hickorynut Ridge, and south of Tray Mountain, at the base of Anna Ruby Falls and the confluence of York Creek and East Fork Smith Creek. The creek runs south and forms Unicoi Lake, a reservoir created by Unicoi State Park Lake Dam, a United States Army Corps of Engineers project in Unicoi State Park, then turns sharply west and flows into the Chattahoochee River in northern Helen, right off of State Route 75. Unicoi State Park
Unicoi State Park & Lodge is a 1,050-acre (4.25 km2) state park (est. in 1954) located immediately north-northeast of Helen, Georgia in the northeastern portion of the state. The centerpiece of the park is Unicoi Lake on Smith Creek. The park is especially popular in October, when the autumn leaves in the forest change colors. ''Unicoi'' is a name derived from the Cherokee language. Entry to the park is from Georgia 356, just off of Georgia State Route 75 (North Main Street in Helen). Georgia 75 Alt allows visitors coming from the south via Cleveland, Georgia to bypass the massive traffic jams on 75 through the town during weekends, holidays, and Oktoberfest. The park also allows access to Anna Ruby Falls, owned by the U.S. Forest Service and run by the non-profit Cradle of Forestry. Separate parking fees must be paid for the park and the falls. Georgia State Route 75
State Route 75 (SR 75) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of White and Towns counties in the northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects Cleveland and the North Carolina state line, via Helen, Macedonia, and Hiawassee. Route description SR 75 begins at an intersection with US 129/ SR 11 (North Main Street) in Cleveland in White County. This intersection also marks the southern terminus of SR 75 Alternate, which runs concurrent with US 129/SR 11 to the northwest. Helen, Georgia
Helen is a city in White County, Georgia, United States, located along the Chattahoochee River. The population was 531 at the 2020 census. History Helen was platted in 1912, and named after the daughter of a lumber official. The town was incorporated in 1913. Formerly a logging town that was in decline, the city resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. This design is mandated through zoning first adopted in 1969, so that the classic south-German style is present on every building, even on the small number of national franchisees present (such as Huddle House and Wendy's).
