Smile (March 26, 1982 – June 1997) was a Florida-bred racehorse born in 1982. He was sired by the stallion In Reality and was out of the Boldnesian mare Sunny Smile, who also produced the Gr. 2 winner Sunshine Today and the multiple stakes winner Charging Through. Race career Smile started his race career at Calder Race Track in Florida, where he was bred. He was undefeated throughout his two-year-old campaign with wins in the Criterium, Dr. Fager, Affirmed and In Reality Stakes. In his three-year-old season, Smile won in the Carry Back Stakes before moving on to Arlington Park. He placed in the Gr. 2 Sheridan Stakes and came in second to Banner Bob, then won the then-Gr. 1 Arlington Classic. In the Gr. 1 American Derby, Smile came in third behind that year’s Belmont Stakes winner, Creme Fraiche. In Reality
In Reality (March 1, 1964 – May 8, 1989) was an American bred racehorse. Bred in Florida, he was a son of Intentionally and out of the mare My Dear Girl, the 1959 American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. His damsire was Santa Anita Derby winner Rough'n Tumble, who sired U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Fager. In Reality is best remembered for his win in the Florida Derby and his runner-up performance in the Preakness Stakes to Eclipse Award Champion and millionaire Damascus. Race career In Reality started his stakes career with a second-place finish in the Cowdin Stakes to the young Dr. Fager and then ran second in the Sapling Stakes. He finished his two-year-old season with a run in the Pimlico Futurity, beating out that year's champion two-year-old, Successor, for the win. Smile Sprint Stakes
The Smile Sprint Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three and older over a distance of six furlongs on the dirt run annually in early July at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. History The race has its origins in what is considered the inaugural running on 8 September 1984 as the Miami Beach Handicap. However, an event with that name was held in 1973 and 1974 but was a two year old race over a distance of a mile. The following year the event was run over a slightly longer distance of 7 furlongs. In 1989 the event was run over 6 furlongs and in 1992 the event was run over a distance of a furlongs. In 1993 the event was renamed to the Miami Beach Sprint Handicap. In 1999 the event was renamed to the Smile Sprint Handicap to honor Frances A. Genter Stable's Florida-bred colt, Smile. Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), is a disease caused by the apicomplexan parasite '' Sarcocystis neurona'' that affects the central nervous system of horses. History EPM was first discovered in the 1960s by the American biologist Dr. Jim Rooney. The disease is considered rare, though recently, an increasing number of cases have been reported. Previous research identified the "barn cat" as the definitive host of the disease. However, since that time it has been learned that the definitive host is the opossum, while any of a number of mammals can serve as intermediate hosts in the disease's two-host life-cycle. Those with horses should not panic and kill opossums or wildlife rather keep feed covered and stalls clean. The term EPM refers to the clinical neurologic symptoms caused by the parasite, not infection itself. Smarty Jones (February 28, 2001) is a champion Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and came second in the Belmont Stakes.
