Rebecca Smethurst is a British astrophysicist, author, and YouTuber who is a junior research fellow at the University of Oxford. She was the recipient of the 2020 Caroline Herschel Prize Lectureship, awarded by the Royal Astronomical Society, as well as the 2020 Mary Somerville Medal and Prize, awarded by the Institute of Physics. In 2022, she won the Royal Astronomical Society's Winton Award "for research by a post-doctoral fellow in Astronomy whose career has shown the most promising development". As a researcher, Smethurst studies the role that supermassive black holes play in inhibiting different types of galaxies from forming stars. Daniel Smethurst (born 13 October 1990) is a British tennis player and coach, who has played on the ITF Circuit and ATP Challenger Tour. On 23 June 2014 he reached his highest ATP singles ranking of World No. 234 and on 28 July 2014 reached his highest doubles ranking of No. 159. Derek Smethurst (born 24 October 1947, in Durban) is a retired South African soccer forward who played professionally in South Africa, England and the United States. Biography Born into a sporting family, both his father Norman and brother Peter played professionally. Smethurst spent time with three amateur teams, Glenwood, Berea Park and Addington, in his early career. He began his professional career with Durban City F.C. In December 1968, he transferred to Chelsea F.C. He spent the remainder of the 1968–1969 and the entire 1969–1970 season with the Chelsea Reserves. Despite missing a large part of the 1969–1970 season with an injury, Smethurst still compiled 20 goals in 42 games with the reserves. He made his first team debut on 1 September 1970. Gamaliel Smethurst
Gamaliel Smethurst (April 9, 1738 – July 20, 1826) was a New England Planter who wrote one of the rare captivity narratives from Nova Scotia and eventually became a politician in Nova Scotia. He represented Cumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1765 to 1770. He was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts, the son of Captain Joseph Smethurst and Tabitha Skinner. In 1761, Smethurst travelled to Chaleur Bay to trade with the French and natives under a license from the military governor of Quebec, James Murray. Smethurst was abandoned by a captain in the employ of Roderick Mackenzie, and so was forced to make his way to Fort Cumberland in the month of November, without food or shelter. Michael Paul Smethurst (born 11 October 1976) is an English former cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Lancashire between 1999 and 2002, having represented the Lancashire Second XI since 1996. His first appearance in the Second XI championship came in June 1996. He made his breakthrough in first-class cricket in April 1999. Richard Good Smethurst (born 17 January 1941) was provost of Worcester College, Oxford, England. Smethurst was educated at Liverpool College, Worcester College, Oxford, and Nuffield College, Oxford. In 1964, Smethurst was appointed research fellow at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
