Smash And Grab (1937 Film)
''Smash and Grab'' is a 1937 British comedy crime film directed by Tim Whelan and starring Jack Buchanan, Elsie Randolph, with Arthur Margetson and Anthony Holles. The film was released in the United States as ''Larceny Street''. The film was shot at Pinewood Studios with sets designed by the art director Douglas Daniels. It was followed by a sequel in 1939 '' The Gang's All Here'' with Buchanan reprising his role and Googie Withers starring as his wife. Plot Private detective John Forrest is hired by an insurance company to hunt down a criminal gang on a spree of smash and grab raids on London jewellers. Together with his wife Alice, he tracks the robbers to a Dublin barbershop that's used for fencing the stolen gems. Tim Whelan (November 2, 1893 – August 12, 1957) was an American film director, writer, producer and actor best remembered for his writing credits on ''Harold Lloyd'' and ''Harry Langdon'' comedies, and his directing of mostly British films (e.g.''The Thief of Bagdad (1940 film), The Thief of Bagdad'' (1940). Peter Gawthorne
Peter Gawthorne (1 September 1884 – 17 March 1962) was an Anglo-Irish actor, probably best known for his roles in the films of Will Hay and other popular British comedians of the 1930s and 1940s. Gawthorne was one of Britain's most called-upon supporting actors during this period. Early life and career He was born in 1884 in Queen's County (now County Laois) in Ireland, but spent most of his career in England. After two years at the ''Academy of Dramatic Art'', Gawthorne began a career on the London stage, eventually running up over twenty years experience there. George Carney
George Carney (21 November 1887 – 9 December 1947) was a British comedian and film actor. Born in Bristol, he worked in the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, in a furniture business, then in the Belfast shipyards. In 1906 he made his debut stage appearance in a pantomime in Nottingham, with his first London appearance following in 1907, as one half of a double act, Carney and Armstrong. They toured together in Britain, Australia and South Africa before Carney set up revues with another comedian, Sam Harris. From 1926, he worked on stage as a solo comedian, with such sketches as "The Fool of the Force", "The Stage Door Keeper", and "I Live in Leicester Square". He then took up a film career, appearing as a character actor in numerous British films, including ''Love on the Dole'' (1941) and '' Brighton Rock'' (1947). He died in London in 1947. He is also credited as the author of several plays and music hall songs. Lawrence Randall Grossmith (29 March 1877 – 21 February 1944) was an English actor, the son of the Gilbert and Sullivan performer George Grossmith and the brother of the actor-manager George Grossmith Jr. After establishing his career in Edwardian musical comedy in London from the first years of the 20th century until the First World War (except for a brief period in the U.S.), Grossmith left England on an extensive tour of the U.S. and Australia, playing in both musicals and non-musical plays.
