Slåtterøy Lighthouse
Slåtterøy Lighthouse ( no, Slåtterøy fyr) is a coastal lighthouse located in the municipality of Bømlo in southwestern Vestland county (previously Hordaland county), Norway. It sits at the western entrance to the Selbjørnsfjorden, marking an island-filled area northeast of Bømlo and northwest of Stord. History The lighthouse was established in 1859 and fully automated in 2003. The round, cast iron tower is painted red with one white horizontal band. At the top, there is a light that emits a 5,180,000 candela, the highest intensity among all lighthouses in Norway. The light sits at an elevation of above sea level and it emits a white light in the pattern of 2 flashes every 30 seconds. The lighthouse was listed as a protected site in 2000 and in 2003 it was fully automated. The ownership of the site was then transferred to the municipal government. Bømlo
Bømlo is a municipality in the southwestern part of Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Svortland. Other villages in Bømlo include Mosterhamn, Rubbestadneset, Lykling, and Langevåg. Most of the municipal residents live on the island of Bømlo, which makes up the majority of the land in the municipality. Bømlo was actively involved in the Shetland bus operation during the Second World War. A 23-year-old male from Bømlo, Nils Nesse, was the first of the Shetland Bus men to be killed. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. Candela
The candela ( or ; symbol: cd) is the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units (SI). It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction. Selbjørnsfjorden
Selbjørnsfjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. The long fjord flows east-west between the municipalities of Austevoll, Fitjar, and Bømlo. It is a wide fjord that starts at the Slåtterøy Lighthouse at the North Sea in the west and flows to the strait of Langenuen in the east. The central part of the fjord reaches about wide. Bømlo (island)
Bømlo (or Bømmeløy) is an island in Vestland county, Norway. At , it is the largest island in the island municipality of Bømlo, lying just off the western coast of Norway. The island sits at the northern entrance to the vast Hardangerfjorden, west of the Stokksundet strait, south of the Selbjørnsfjorden, and east of the North Sea. In the 1800s, the Kulleseid Canal was built across a small isthmus in the central part of the island, giving a shortcut from the eastern side of the island to the western side of the island. The large island of Stord lies just to the east and the smaller island of Moster lies to the southwest. There are hundreds of other small islands surrounding Bømlo. Stord (island)
Stord is an island in Vestland county, Norway. Located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland, the island is part of the municipalities of Stord (southern part) and Fitjar (northern part). The largest settlements on the island are the town of Leirvik (granted town status in 1997) and the villages of Sagvåg and Fitjar. Geography Stord has an area of and the highest point is the tall mountain Mehammarsåto. The island lies on the northern side of the mouth of the great Hardangerfjorden. Cast iron is a class of iron–carbon alloys with a carbon content more than 2%. Its usefulness derives from its relatively low melting temperature.
