Slot Antenna
A slot antenna consists of a metal surface, usually a flat plate, with one or more holes or slots cut out. When the plate is driven as an antenna by an applied radio frequency current, the slot radiates electromagnetic waves in a way similar to a dipole antenna. The shape and size of the slot, as well as the driving frequency, determine the radiation pattern. Slot antennas are usually used at UHF and microwave frequencies at which wavelengths are small enough that the plate and slot are conveniently small. At these frequencies, the radio waves are often conducted by a waveguide, and the antenna consists of slots in the waveguide; this is called a slotted waveguide antenna. Multiple slots act as a directive array antenna and can emit a narrow fan-shaped beam of microwaves. X-band
The X band is the designation for a band of frequencies in the microwave radio region of the electromagnetic spectrum. In some cases, such as in communication engineering, the frequency range of the X band is rather indefinitely set at approximately 7.0–11.2 GHz. In radar engineering, the frequency range is specified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as 8.0–12.0 GHz. Ernest Wilmot Guptill
Ernest Wilmot Guptill (5 September 1919 – 20 March 1976) was a Canadian physicist. He spent his academic career at Dalhousie University, where he was department head for ten years. He was co-inventor of the slotted waveguide antenna. Early life and education Guptill, the son of a fisherman, was born in the village of Grand Harbour on Grand Manan Island. He attended Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia as an undergraduate. After earning an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Acadia, he studied at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a Master of Science degree, and then went to McGill University for his doctoral studies. Cheese Antenna
The cheese antenna, also known as a pillbox antenna and a parallel-plate antenna, is a type of microwave-frequency radio antenna found in certain types of radar. The antenna consists of a suitable microwave source, almost always some sort of feed horn, positioned in front of a reflector consisting of a thin two-dimensional parabolic curve with metal plates on either side. Alan Dower Blumlein (29 June 1903 – 7 June 1942) was an English electronics engineer, notable for his many inventions in telecommunications, sound recording, stereophonic sound, television and radar. In telecommunications, a collinear antenna array (sometimes colinear antenna array) is an array of dipole or quarter-wave antennas mounted in such a manner that the corresponding elements of each antenna are parallel and collinear; that is, they are located along a common axis.
