Slingsby Skylark
The Slingsby T.37 Skylark 1 was a small low-cost sailplane built during 1952-3 at Kirbymoorside, Yorkshire by Slingsby Sailplanes. Design and development Fred Slingsby wanted to take a larger slice of the glider market with a small low-cost sailplane with better than average performance. The key to this ethos was smaller aircraft use less materials and modern aerofoil sections could give much better performance. Slingsby appointed John Reussner as draughtsman and designer for the T.37 Skylark. The relatively new five-digit NACA series of aerofoil sections was chosen because they would give low drag over a wide airspeed range ("wide Drag Bucket"). To maintain laminar flow and gain the benefit of the NACA sections it was necessary to build the wings very accurately and ensure that the surface remained true during the life of the aircraft. Slingsby Aviation
Slingsby Aviation was a British aircraft manufacturer based in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England. The company was founded to design and build gliders and sailplanes. From the early 1930s to around 1970 it built over 50% of all British club gliders and had success at national and international level competitions. It then produced some powered aircraft, notably the composite built Firefly trainer, before becoming a producer of specialised composite materials and components. The business is now known as Marshall Advanced Composites and produces composite parts for ships, submarines and aircraft. It is a subsidiary of Marshall of Cambridge. ''Aucoumea klaineana'' (angouma, gaboon, or okoumé) is a tree in the family Burseraceae, native to equatorial west Africa in Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, and Río Muni. The SZD-22 Mucha Standard (''Szybowcowy Zakład Doświadczalny'' – Glider Experimental Works) was a single-seat aerobatic glider designed and built in Poland from 1957. Development Developed especially for the 1958 World Gliding Championships, the SZD-22 Mucha Standard was a direct descendant of the IS-2 Mucha (''Fly''), from 1948, and SZD-12 Mucha 100, from 1953, with very similar lines and dimensions. Plywood is a material manufactured from thin layers or "plies" of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. It is an engineered wood from the family of manufactured boards which include medium-density fibreboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB) and particle board (chipboard). In fluid dynamics, laminar flow is characterized by fluid particles following smooth paths in layers, with each layer moving smoothly past the adjacent layers with little or no mixing. At low velocities, the fluid tends to flow without lateral mixing, and adjacent layers slide past one another like playing cards.
