Sleepy-Time Squirrel
''Sleepy-Time Squirrel'' is a 1954 MGM cartoon featuring Barney Bear. It is the 25th Barney Bear short. Plot Barney gets ready to hibernate for the winter, but notices that he is out of firewood, so he chops a nearby tree to get some. Unbeknownst to him, the tree was the home of a squirrel named Jimmy who was also hibernating, so Barney calms the irate squirrel by letting him sleep in his cabinet drawer. Jimmy turns out to be noisy, breaking crockery, opening a window, and giving off loud noises while eating nuts. When Jimmy does fall asleep, he has nightmares of being chased by an angry purple turtle, waking him up again. Barney gives Jimmy a sleeping pill to make him doze off immediately, but Jimmy snores so loudly that he keeps Barney awake. Barney puts a hose onto Jimmy's mouth and puts the other end in a tree outside his house to divert the noise. Dick Lundy (animator)
Richard James Lundy (August 14, 1907 – April 7, 1990) was an American animator and film director who worked at several animation studios including The Walt Disney Company, MGM, and Hanna-Barbera. Lundy was a pioneer of personality animation and is best remembered as one of the creators of Donald Duck. Throughout his career he worked as a primary animator on at least 60 films, both short and feature-length, and directed 51 shorts. Early life Lundy was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to James and Minnie Lundy, their only child. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Detroit, where Lundy's father worked as an inspector for the Burroughs Adding machine Company. When Lundy was ten years old, his parents separated and he and his mother went to live in Port Huron north of Detroit. They later moved back to the city where Lundy's mother worked as a waitress. ''Bird-Brain Bird Dog'' is a 1954 animated short film, directed by Dick Lundy for MGM as part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's ''Barney Bear'' series, involving Barney getting himself an uncooperative dog to hunt birds. It is the 26th ''Barney Bear'' short. This is also the last Barney Bear cartoon in the 1950s and in the original era. Plot As quail season opens, Barney Bear goes downtown to buy himself a bird dog to hunt quail. Unbeknownst to him, he ends up getting a bird-loving dog. While out hunting, he tells the dog to get him "something to shoot at", so it sets up some cans along the fence for him. But when Barney tells him to hunt for birds with him, the dog refuses, showing off his Bird Lovers card. The dog then runs out into the woods to save a baby quail while Barney tries hunting for it.
