Slavic Toponyms Of Places In Xanthi Prefecture
Many inhabited places in Xanthi Prefecture of Greece had older Greek and non-Greek forms. Most of those names were in use during the multinational environment of the Ottoman Empire, which controlled the region until the Balkan Wars on 1912–1913. Some of the forms were identifiably of Greek origin, others of Turkish, of Slavic and of more obscure origins. Following the First World War and the Greco-Turkish War which followed, an exchange of population took place between Greece, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey (the Treaty of Neuilly between Greece and Bulgaria and the Treaty of Lausanne between Greece and Turkey). The villages of the exchanged populations (Bulgarians and Muslims) in Greece were resettled with Greek refugees from Asia Minor and local Macedonian Greeks. Xanthi Prefecture
Xanthi (, el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Ξάνθης, Turkish: İskeçe) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Modern regions of Greece, Region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The capital is Xanthi. Together with the regional units Rhodope (regional unit), Rhodope and Evros (regional unit), Evros, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. Geography Xanthi borders the Bulgarian provinces of Smolyan Province, Smolyan and Kardzhali Province, Kardzhali to the north, and the Aegean Sea to the south. The regional unit of Kavala (regional unit), Kavala lies to the west, Drama (regional unit), Drama to the northwest and Rhodope (regional unit), Rhodope to the east. Slavic Dialects Of Greece
The Slavic dialects of Greece are the Eastern South Slavic dialects of Macedonian and Bulgarian spoken by minority groups in the regions of Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece. Usually, dialects in Thrace are classified as Bulgarian, while the dialects in Macedonia are classified as Macedonian, with the exception of some eastern dialects which can also be classified as Bulgarian. Until the official codification of Macedonian in 1945 many linguists considered all these to be Bulgarian dialects. However, some linguists opposed this view and considered Macedonian dialects as comprising an independent language distinct from both Bulgarian and Serbian. Stavroupoli ( el, Σταυρούπολη) is a village and a former municipality in the Xanthi regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Xanthi, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 342.002 km2. Population 2,050 (2011).
