Slate Range (California)
The Slate Range is located in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California, southwest of Death Valley and east of Trona. The mountains lie to the east of Searles Lake and the Argus Range at the southern end of the Panamint Range. The southern part of the range lies in the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, which is off-limit to the general public. Manly Pass lies at the northern end of the Slate Range, with Layton Pass at the southern end. Trona, San Bernardino County, California
Trona is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California. In 2015 it had a population of approximately 1,900. Trona is at the western edge of Searles Lake, a dry lake bed in Searles Valley, southwest of Death Valley. The town takes its name from the mineral trona, abundant in the lakebed. It is about northeast of Los Angeles, on State Route 178. The ZIP code is 93562. Trona is known for its isolation and desolation, as well as the nearby Trona Pinnacles. The local school plays on a dirt football field because the searing heat and highly saline soil kills grass. Searles Lake
Searles Lake is an endorheic dry lake in the Searles Valley of the Mojave Desert, in northwestern San Bernardino County, California. The lake in the past was also called Slate Range Lake and Borax Lake. The mining community of Trona is on its western shore. The evaporite basin is approximately long and at its widest point, yielding 1.7 million tons annually of industrial minerals within the basin to the Searles Valley Minerals mining operations. Argus Range
The Argus Range is a mountain range located in Inyo County, California, southeast of the town of Darwin, California, Darwin. The range forms the western boundary of Panamint Valley, and the northwestern boundary of Searles Valley. The Coso Range is located to the west, and the Panamint Range to the east. Panamint Range
The Panamint Range is a short rugged fault-block mountain range in the northern Mojave Desert, within Death Valley National Park in Inyo County, eastern California. Dr. Darwin French is credited as applying the term Panamint in 1860 during his search for the fabled Gunsight Lode. The orographic identity has been liberally applied for decades to include other ranges. The origin of the name is the Paiute or Koso word Panümünt or Pa (water) and nïwïnsti (person).
