Slapshot (song)
"Slapshot" is a 1995 song written by Ray Castoldi, the music director and organist for Madison Square Garden. The song was written as a goal song for the New York Rangers and was debuted on January 20, 1995, in Madison Square Garden. The Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers also use the horn, along with the same or similar horn. The recording of the song that is used by the Rangers at their home games was created by local rock band Bad Apple. Composition and recording During the 1994–95 NHL lockout, the New York Rangers sought to create a goal song that was unique to the Rangers and would not receive radio airtime. This followed the victory of the New York Rangers in the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Ray Castoldi, the music director and organist for Madison Square Garden, found inspiration to write a song that would become what he later described as a "signature song" for the Rangers, by whom he was commissioned. Ray Castoldi
Ray Castoldi has been the stadium organist at Madison Square Garden since 1989. During the summer, when the New York Rangers and New York Knicks are spending their offseasons, Castoldi was heard at the organ at New York Mets games at Citi Field until 2014 (and previously Shea Stadium). Because of this, he is the only person to play for the Mets, Rangers and Knicks in the same season. (Similarly Gladys Gooding had played organ for the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Knicks and Rangers in the same year; likewise Eddie Layton and Jack Shaindlin played for the New York Yankees, Knicks and Rangers in the same season.) Castoldi has played the organ at the 1994 NBA Finals, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, 1994 NHL All-Star Game, 1998 NBA All-Star Game, and the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals all of which were played at Madison Square Garden. 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs, the playoff tournament of the National Hockey League (NHL), began after the conclusion of the 1993–94 NHL season. The sixteen teams that qualified, eight from each conference, played best-of-seven game series for conference quarterfinals, semifinals and championships; and then the conference champions played a best-of-seven series for the Stanley Cup. The playoffs ended when the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh game of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. In total, an NHL record seven game sevens were played in this year's playoffs, two of which went to overtime. For the first time since joining the NHL, all four former WHA teams (Edmonton, Hartford, Quebec, and Winnipeg) failed to make the playoffs. Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. (also known as MSG Sports) is an American sports holding company based in New York City. MSG Sports manages professional sports teams. These include the National Basketball Association's New York Knicks and their NBA G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, and the National Hockey League's New York Rangers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup (french: La Coupe Stanley) is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the "most important championships available to the sport". The trophy was commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. The entire Stanley family supported the sport, the sons and daughters all playing and promoting the game.
