Skywalker (horse)
Skywalker (March 4, 1982 – February 25, 2003) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was best known for winning the 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic. Background Bred in Kentucky by Thomas P. Tatham's Oak Cliff Thoroughbreds Ltd., who also bred Sunday Silence, Skywalker was foaled on March 4, 1982 and raised at Arthur B. Hancock III's Stone Farm. Sired by Relaunch and out of the mare Bold Captive, he was named by Tatham's son for Luke Skywalker, a lead character in the ''Star Wars'' motion pictures. Skywalker was trained by Michael Whittingham and raced under the Oak Cliff Stable partnership led by Thomas Tatham. Racing career Skywalker began racing in California in 1984 at age two, where he won one of his two starts and was off the board in the other. Relaunch (March 16, 1976 – November 5, 1996) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Relaunch was a gray horse bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm & Taylor Made Farms. During his racing career he was owned by Glen Hill Farm and trained by John H. Adams. Racing career Relaunch won five of his eighteen starts, including the Del Mar Derby and the La Jolla Handicap in 1979. Eddie Delahoussaye
Edward J. Delahoussaye (born September 21, 1951) is a retired American Thoroughbred jockey from New Iberia, Louisiana. He began his career in 1968 and ten years later became the top American jockey with 384 wins. He has won the Kentucky Derby in two consecutive years, riding Gato Del Sol in 1982 and Sunny's Halo in 1983 after finishing second in the 1981 Derby. In addition to his wins at the Kentucky Derby, he won the 1988 Preakness Stakes and the 1988 and 1992 Belmont Stakes as well as seven Breeders' Cup races. Eddie Delahoussaye was awarded the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1981. He was inducted into the Fair Grounds Racing Hall of Fame in 1991 and in 1993 into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting. The Hall of Fame's nominating committee selects eight to ten candidates from among the four Contemporary categories (male horse, female horse, jockey and trainer) to be presented to the voters.
