Skellington (album)
''Skellington'' is the fifth solo album by Julian Cope, released in November 1989 as a semi-official bootleg for fan club members only. Originally released on Cope's own CopeCo label, it was later reissued in March 1990 through Zippo Records. ''Skellington'' was expanded with the addition of a sequel ''Skellington 2: He's Back ... and this time it's personal'' and released in 1993 as '' The Skellington Chronicles''. In 2018, Cope released a third installment, ''Skellington 3''. Background ''Skellington'' was recorded in just two days in April 1989. It was inspired by Cope's frustration with the work on his 1988 album '' My Nation Underground'', which he had lost faith in even as he completed it. The two-day session used the same studio setup as the prior album but an entirely different approach. Julian Cope
Julian David Cope (born 21 October 1957) is an English musician and author. He was the singer and songwriter in Liverpool post-punk band the Teardrop Explodes and has followed a solo career since 1983 in addition to working on musical side projects such as Queen Elizabeth, Brain Donor and Black Sheep. Cope is also an author on Neolithic culture, publishing ''The Modern Antiquarian'' in 1998, and a political and cultural activist with a public interest in occultism and paganism. The Town House (also known as Townhouse Studios) was a recording studio located at 150 Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush in London, built in 1978 under the direction of Richard Branson for Virgin Records. The studios changed ownership and eventually ceased operation in 2008, with luxury apartments now in its place. Neo-psychedelia
Neo-psychedelia is a diverse genre of psychedelic music that draws inspiration from the sounds of 1960s psychedelia, either updating or copying the approaches from that era. Originating in the 1970s, it has occasionally seen mainstream pop success but is typically explored within alternative rock scenes. It initially developed as an outgrowth of the British post-punk scene, where it was also known as acid punk. My Nation Underground
''My Nation Underground'' is the fourth solo album by Julian Cope. It produced three singles including "Charlotte Anne" (which reached number 35 in the UK charts in September 1988 and was also Cope's only song to reach any position on the US charts). The album's music is an extension of the more commercial side of Cope's songwriting, following on from the relative commercial and organisational success of its predecessor '' Saint Julian''. However, Cope himself has all but disowned ''My Nation Underground'', considering it an artistic mis-step which failed to produce the music which he wanted (although he has also accepted responsibility for the failure). ''Droolian'' is the sixth album by Julian Cope, released in 1990. Background ''Droolian'' was recorded against the background of Cope's disagreement with Island Records, the record label to which he was contracted at the time. During this time, Cope was discovering that the recordings he made on a low-budget, one-take approach were more pleasing to him than the slicker, densely produced recordings which Island favoured. He had already recorded and released a lo-fi album - '' Skellington'' - which had led to problems with Island. Following a similar recording ethic ''Droolian'' was recorded over a three-day period, on a 4-track portastudio set up in the Liverpool living room of Cope's old friend and former Zoo Records cohort Pam "Pammo" Young. Donald Skinner is a guitarist, songwriter and producer primarily known for his work with Julian Cope. Skinner is commonly known by the name Donald Ross Skinner with the addition of the middle name of ''Ross'' attributed to him by Cope after Glenn Ross Campbell, the pedal steel player from The Misunderstood. He is currently a guitarist for Love Amongst Ruin and DC Fontana. Ian Stephen McCulloch (born 5 May 1959) is an English singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Echo & the Bunnymen.
