Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of rays. Alternatively, the name "skate" is used to refer to the entire order of Rajiformes (families Anacanthobatidae, Arhynchobatidae, Gurgesiellidae and Rajidae).
